If the phone is plugged into the computer, it is charged while tethering, so... really good

I've yet to buy my Storm (waiting for the 9520 on Rogers) and I'm not sure how tethering works with them. I would assume (hope) that as long as you stay within your 1GB or 6GB of data, or whatever plan you have, you don't get charged extra for tethering.

EDIT: Nope, they don't allow free tethering either. I don't have a laptop right now, but it'd have been nice to have that capability for the future.

VZAccess Manager

Verizon's software site, download verizon access manager to make the berry work as a modem.

Cheers and good luck

Not standing in line tomorrow, but going by to see if I can buy in person, or need to call in.

I was told that leaving it plugged into the the car charger for extended periods will try to "overcharge" the battery.

Then the Verizon person told me the same was true for the USB port?

Is that true, or just another clueless cell phone store employee?

Default tethering on a desktop

Greetings,

I had tethering with another blackberry but have not, as yet, done it with my Storm. But I have another question. I want to put another desktop in my bedroom. Can you tether with the Storm to a desktop? I guess theoretically it would work but want to get the opinion of the experts before I pull my hair out it it can't be done.

Yes, it will work just the same. A computer is a computer.

No, the battery cannot be overcharged. Modern lithium ion/lithium polymer batteries have charging circuits that stop feeding juice to the battery when it's at a certain level. They also cut off the circuit when the battery depletes to 5%-10% percent of its total capacity to prevent it from going completely dead; that's bad for lithium ions.

About the only 'maintenance' you'll need to do with your battery is make sure it doesn't freeze or get too hot.

Default tethering on the Storm

Hi,

This peaked my interest again so I tried tethering with my Storm. I installed the Desktop Manager on my laptop. connected the Storm and was surfering in no time.

It IS faster than my previous blackberry and I am loving it. Will install tethering on a desktop in another room sometime this week.

In my opinion, using the software makes tethering slower. I always create a DUN profile through windows directly. I get much better speeds that way I think its possible that verizon caps data through the VZaccess Manager software.

Default tethering from a storm...

I never said I used the VZAccess Manager to tether. I did not. I said I installed the Desktop Manager which you have to do to get the drivers that it needs to tether. I did create a DUN. Actually it was the DUN that I had with my 8703e that already had the number, username, and password entered.

And as I said before, the Storm does tethering faster than the 8703e.

Its not unlimited no matter what Verizon says (5120Mb)/ month. They charge 20 cents every Mb over...I use about 30,000Mb/ Month and my company has to pay the charges because they are the only carrier with data where I am . Its highway robbery thats almost a $5000 bill last month alone! when we call them they will credit the account for $200- $300. Thats nothing compared to the profit margin they are getting on .20 cents every MB

If that's true, your company would be much better off to buy you 5 or 6 air cards and use each one until it got close to 5GB each month, then switch to the next one. $60/mo for an aircard x 5 air cards is still only $300/mo. A lot better than $5,000/mo.
