Service books question...
Please Login to Remove!
Are service books specific to the device? I am with AT&T, and I am wondering if AT&T service books are the same regardless of the BlackBerry model (8100, 8310, 8900, 9000)...
Can anyone comment on this?

some are. some arnt. it really depends on the book.
however, all u need to do is register to the Host Routing Table and this wont matter

Interesting question. I thought they were carrier specific because I notice certain items get pushed depending on your carrier.

Here's the deal. My wife has an 8100 without a data plan. (No comments, please - it's her choice - she likes the phone and uses it as a PIM and a phone.)
Background: We also have an unlimited text plan, but in the past she has had problems receiving picture messages (MMS)... long story short, she was missing that service book. At first AT&T said it was because of no data plan, though unlimited texting, per AT&T TOS includes MMS... we finally got someone to send her the correct service books.
Issue: She wants more current themes for her phone - but she is running a 4.2 OS. If I upgrade the OS, she is afraid that she will lose the ability to send/receive MMS again (service books issue). I am not sure that she will, BUT if I upgrade the OS on her phone AND she loses the service books, I get to move into the doghouse.
So, now my question. Are AT&T service books (1) the same for all devices, (2) different by device, and (3) does the OS version matter?
Sorry to disappoint, but it's nothing nefarious...  |

I'm deliberately not going to over-answer this post... but I will say this...
When you upgrade the device OS, the service books are backed up, and then restored as part of the upgrade process.
Take from that what you will. ;)

With the addition of "supposed to be," the OP may not get burned.
You are well advised to perform a manual backup and verify this backup before attempting the upgrade. The automatic backup/restore has been known to fail on occasion for any number of reasons.

Yeah, I recently experienced that when upgrading my son-in-law's Curve... fortunately I did a manual backup if his calendar entries... day saved. That experience is what raised my concerns about this.
So is the consensus that if I do a manual backup, I can recover the services books, if necessary, post upgrading my wife's Pearl? And that is true regardless of the OS version? And if AT&T resends services books after the upgrade if I have to do the registration process again... what then? The concern is losing the MMS service book again. |

That would be my assessment, yes. I have found the service books to be non-OS specific, non-device specific, but very carrier specific.

I've seen folks out there saving service books and posting them for others to obtain certain functionality. This was most prevalent with AT&T people trying to use Yahoo Instant Messenger before AT&T supported same.
If she has the book on there now, you should be able to capture that with a backup, as with your own. A selective restore will replace all service books with the one you are restoring. You will then need to re-register the device on the carrier network via host routing table. This will push the remaining needed books from the carrier.
But in all likelihood, unless they remove the MMS service book from her profile, it should remain after. Worst case is that you may need to restore it from the pre-upgrade backup.
