Default Help! Water Damage.

Please Login to Remove!

I washed my BB last night with my pants on accident.
I realized about 2 minutes later that I had left it in my pants.
So I got it, I removed the battery, sim and memory card.
About 5 minutes later, after drying it off with a towel ( I realize now that I shouldn't have done this) I put the battery back in to see if it would work. It turned on and had a constant vibration.
I took the battery out and waited til this morning to try again.
The phone was much more dry this morning, about 8 hours later.
I again put the battery in and the same constant vibration occurred.
I read some articles about fixing water damaged BBs and I tried the bake at 150 degrees method. I did that for about 2 hours. It seemed completely dry and all of the condensation had evaporated from the screen.
I tried to put the battery in again and now nothing happens. No vibration. No LED. Nothing.
Any idea what I could do to fix this?

Welcome to the forums.

I think it may be too late but look here:

Got Your BlackBerry Wet? - BlackBerryFAQ

I've never heard of baking your device

Remove the battery for a good 3-4 days and set the device in a bag of uncooked rice to help absorb the moisture.

Baked BlackBerry?

smfh

Read the FAQ above. I have saved and seen saved many soaked BlackBerrys using the info in that FAQ, but I have never baked one, AND, leaving the battery out completely for the 3-5 days is required.

May I ask why it is required?
If it is "dry" (which mine may or may not be) what would keep it from working?
I googled "Blackberry Water Damage" and I read multiple threads about baking it at low temp. And it seemed to have worked. Its probably no different then leaving it outside in this texas weather for a few hours. I already have a brand new 8310, it was covered by insurence. But I really would like to get my address book from my previous phone. Doesnt really matter to me if the screen works or not, I just need it to be read by USB.
Appreciate the help.

You probably should have Googled BlackBerry water damage before attempting to replace the battery.

Understandable.
I would agree if it werent for it turning on again about 4 hours ago and doing the same thing after being left to try for 8-10 hours.

So no one knows why it was just a constant vibration along with the red LED being lit?

IMO you quite possibly caused irreparable damage to the circuitry of the device by putting the battery back in so soon. Regardless of what you did after that point, the damage was probably done.

Gonna go to Cellfix (local cell phone repair shop) and get an official diagnosis. I will let you know when I return.

They are not official. They are general repair shop. You'll get better diagnosis from here, those of us, even 1,000 miles away.

Because water is NOT the culprit here.

Water + electricity = BAD BAD BAD.

You can even wash an electronic device like a BlackBerry in water, and dry it out properly with no electricity present, and it will work again, and this is even commonly recommended for a BB that has had something sugary like CocaCola spilt on it, or been dunked in salt water where the remaining dry mineral salts will also ruin the device, once dried.

so, that is why the 4-5 days is required.

I see.
Well they are going to see if they can possibly pull the data from the harddrive (or motherboard, or whatever) and put it on a disk for me. Its free if they can't so we'll see.

Tell them to be very very careful.

There are qualified BlackBerry device forensics businesses available, but most personal users cannot afford the service, mostly only our government can. You're talking real money.

That's why the BlackBerry is popularly secure. Not just any Tom, Dick and Harry is qualified to extract data from the device, and what they may get will be unusably encrypted.

My best advice is to let it dry completely per the FAQ link and get the data that way.

THEN, take it for forensics data extraction, if they even can.

So the guy at the repair shop said the constant vibration when I plugged the phone in could be the result of a short between the battery and the vibrator. Can anyone confirm this?
That being said, it sounds like the phone is completely fried and is incapable of ever powering on again.

That sounds plausible.

If it is important data, you will know in 3-5 days if it is lost.

You have no backup or Outlook sync?

No.
I need my old phone to be able to power on at least enough for the USB to detect it so I can switch over all the data from the old phone to the new one.
I dont expect the phone to be fully functional again.

This is a good lesson on why regular backups are extremely important.

Well I assume that it is totally dry but if for any reason there may be any H2O left in there I have read that sticking it in a bowl of (uncooked!) rice draws the moisture out overnight.
