Default Thank-you AT&T! Let me off the hook without paying ETF

I have to say that during these times of economic recession, I have to commend AT&T for stepping up and helping folks out.

I have had a Family Talk 850 account with 2 lines for about 6 years. For work, about a year ago, I added another plan to my account for the Blackberry Curve, unlimited talk, Blackberry data, and the $5 messaging plan, which my company would reimburse me for. I recently lost that job, but still had 11 months left on my contract. I was afraid that I was going to have to pay the $175 ETF fee, which would have been fine, since the plan was already costing me $135 plus around $12 in junk fees each month.

However, I was transferred to the retention department. I told them of my situation, why I was canceling this line, and they came up with a better idea. They simply took my business line and added it as a third number to my Family Talk plan for just $9.95 a month. They also let me out of the $30/month Blackberry data plan and I turned off the text messaging plan. So over the 11 months, I will only have to pay $110 for the line, rather than fork over $175 in one lump sum right now. At the end of the 11 months, the contract will be up and then I can simply cancel the line with no ETF, if I want.

Plus, if I get another job that would necessitate the use of a phone, I do not lose my number, and I can simply put the phone on its own plan again.

Way to go AT&T!

Kudos to AT&T Wireless for doing the right thing. Had a friend with a similar situation with DirecTV and it took a while, but they also did the right thing.
