Changing the limit for an SMS

I live in South Korea and I have a 9000 locked to the exclusive local provider (SK Telecom). As most of you would know, the BB's limit for an SMS is 160 ROMAN CHARACTERS (which would translate to 160 bytes). If I want to type Korean, the BB automatically changes to show an 80-character limit (which translates to 160 bytes since Korean is a two-byte language).
However, it turns out that in Korea, there is an 80-byte limit for SMS regardless of language. I learned this the hard way when I got my phone bill last month. Is there a way to artificially change the limit the BB shows? Or am I bound to do mental math every time I SMS someone?
And I was so happy that I didn't have to type any more shorthand...crap.
