Cool use wifi when data is turned off

Please Login to Remove!

I have done a lot of searching for this. What I have learned is:
  • this could be carrier specific
  • need a different browser. Other then the default blackberry browser
  • need to enable wifi hotspot in advanced options BUT where is advanced options for browser? I cannot find the same in 9780?
  • disable mobile network to use wifi easily but that makes no sense as disabling mobile network will disconnect my phone from the mobile network. I will miss on important calls.

I am using vodafone unlimited data plans but under this plan I will be charged if I do video streaming. Henceforth, I want to use wifi whenever I have a wifi hotspot available. The issue is that I am able to connect to wifi but I cannot use wifi if I turn the data server off.

Is it really possible to use wifi with data turned off from the default blackberry browser in 9780 or should I download opera?

Turning data off, well, turns data off. Period. Has nothing to do with the browser.

If you want to be absolutely sure the mobile network is not used and only wifi, disable the mobile network connection. This will force all data through wifi, but recognize you will also be turning off voice (unless you have UMA).

I wish is was that simple. Once I turn the data off then I am not able to surf the net though I am connected to WiFi hot spot.

Any other thoughts?

It is that simple. DON'T turn data off. Only turn off the Mobile Network.
Re-read post #2 above.

Wi-fi IS a data service, so turning data off, turns data off, as said above.
And just because Data services are located under mobile network doesn't mean that is all it affects.
