Well, all was going well until yesterday, when I got my first DCR message. I'm not going to be disappointed or overreact yet because it's the only one so far, but I will continue to keep an eye on it over time. Hopefully, the problem will not be as common as with the 4.0.2 software.

No, Dial by name does not work and this is disappointing. Maybe a setting I can't find??? Frustrating as it was in the last version (4.0.2) but is not in this current release - and, it's very useful...

No themes are included - but if you go to the BlackBerry Extras web site (via the 'berry) you can download a couple there. I like the "Smoothie" theme myself... Any other theme repositories out there?

I have a question about the recent upgrade. Once I downloaded it to my 7250 my compose email icon has disappeared. Has this happend to anyone else? Is this part of the software upgrade? Also does anyone know if verizon will be coming out with the 8700 series?

thanks

Yes that is a know event, here is a work around it, a small utility written by one of our moderators Mark Rejohn:

QuickCompose
Wireless Link: www.marky.com/files/bb/QuickCompose.jad
Desktop Link: blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=25495
One hotkey access ("C" key) to immediately composing a blank new email message. Requires BlackBerryOS 4.1 or later. This readds the missing Compose icon from earlier BlackBerryOS software, while using the new convenient New Email interface of OS 4.1. Free utility written by Mark Rejhon (based on Ramble's version). To enable hotkeys, turn off "Dial From Home Screen" setting in Phone->Options. (You can press the phone hotkey before dialing, anyway). Hotkeys do not work on 71XX series, so you have to manually launch via icon. However, hotkeys works from PocketDay as an assigned key if you need hotkeys on the 71XX series.

VZW added the EVDO provisioning to BB 7250 account holders over the past few months in anticipation of the upgrade.

If you're still getting a 1X signal after upgrading, you're probably either not provisioned for EVDO or are in an area.

Hope it works out for you.

It will upgrade some other crap from verizon, dealing with their netwok codes in your phone...

I figured that was by design.

Anyway, it's been worth waiting six months for 4.1, 4.0.2 just wouldn't install on my 7250, feh!

Patience does pay off.

Those of you having problems with tethering...

I just got off the phone with VZW after I upgraded and could no longer tether. My symptoms were that VZAccess would dial, authenticate, then report "connected", then disconnect after a total of 16-20 seconds on the timer.

The tier 2 support gal had me remove the Venturi Client Access from the Add/Remove Software control panel and reboot. After that it worked great the first time. Apparently the new software doesn't get along with the data compression that the Venturi software provides.

Now, I *do* have the tethering option on my account, so I'm not disputing KonTiki's assertion that the tethering is no longer available as a pay-as-you-go option, I'm just throwing out what worked for me. Hopefully it'll help someone else.

Also, anyone having the same DNS problems that I noted above can add:
204.2.240.25 download.vzwshop.com
to their hosts file to get to the downloads. From what I can tell from different machines around the country, they're doing some sort of distrubuted load balancing based on your location and some of their DNS is screwed up royally.

That's the IP address of an Akemai server one SONET hop from our server co-loed at Level 3, so I got something stupid, like 900KB/s download speeds.

I just got of the phone with them as well. They said they had to add the National broadband access to the account. That will allow you on the EDVO network

Brunson I tried what Verizon suggested by uninstalling the Venturi Client and rebooting and I still have the same password username error, so the reason it works for you is as I stated before, Verizon will only allow tethering of any sort if you are willing to tack on the $15 additional.

You are paying the additional that is why removing the Venturi works for you.

Yes, it's v4.1 causing the tethering issue. I was able to tether with 4.02 and it was not added as an option to my account. As soon as I upgraded to 4.1 (telstra and now verizon), the tethering option was broken, both using the VZAccess client and manually using windows networking modem. I just called today and officially added tethering for $15 a month. It now works with the VZAccess client and windows networking modem.

I'm not overly impressed with the speeds, though. I'm on a Verizon 7250 in Los Angeles. I am getting 400k at work, in the valley and only 100-150k at home near LAX. It's certainly better than dialup but I would've hoped that LA would have great coverage all over.

After begrudgingly getting the $15/month tethering option, I'm actually finding that I'm getting MUCH better reception than I did before. I take the train to work and I would always lose signal in certain areas. Since upgrading to 4.1, those "dead spots" have vanished. I'm not sure if it's the code or if the 7250 is able to pick up "new" towers.

I'm getting 800k with 4.1 while riding in the car. Pretty cool. $15 a month is not bad when considering that a Verizon air card costs 4 times as much. So for what it costs for the card we can put 4 BB users on tether.

And I just checked the other bug I've had with all of the 4.1 firmwares and now still have with the official release. When in the browser, if I enter select mode and select 'Full Image' (to view an online comic at a readable size, for example), I get a blank white screen regardless of the zoom options. This also happens if I attempt to open any saved GIF image stored on my device. Is anyone else experiencing this, or am I the only one?
Absolutely positively getting this exact same behavior. Can't figure out why SOME of them are okay, yet others are not. Case in point, weather radar charts from weather.com or weatherunderground.com - select "Full Screen" and get nothing but a completely blank screen! It obviously worked before because one of my users is a pilot and always used to check radar images before heading out on his BB - might have to downgrade him until it's fixed.

Shortcut keys.

By turning off "Dial From Home Screen" in the phone options both of these shortcuts work and are fairly effective.

To Compose - press m then c (granted you have to press two buttons, but you don't have to use the wheel)

To Dial by Name - press a followed by spelling the name

Both of these seem to be fairly quick. Hope this helps.

Default Update

Since the upgrade, 48 hours without a Data Connection Refused. That's a record.

I do miss the dial by name, even though there's a workaround. It just seems odd that they'd remove something as innocuous and useful. I can't imagine tons of people complaining about it to the point of taking it out. I must just have been an oversight.

Has anyone noticed getting a 1x after being on the phone for a long period of time (30 mins to an hour). I noticed it back on 4.0.2 more often, but 4.1 has been nearly flawless except for yesterday when I noticed my 7250 sitting on 1x while sitting on a conference call. I also noticed my bluetooth headset connection being lost once on 4.1. That's a lot better than the several times a day I'd get it with 4.0.2.

I do miss the ability to tether though. I feel as if my internet connection backup plan is gone, and I can't justify paying the $15 right now...not to mention, I think my company would frown upon it since they're the ones fronting the bill!

This is weird.

After turning off "Dial from home scree" I can still dial from the home screen.

I can even set up a speed dial as well as use the shortcut for the same letter.

Example : m = Messages hold m = Dial Mom
