Probably just got an image that was all Black and set it as his Background which you can do my hitting the menu key on that image.

Ahhh okay so just "Set to homepage" and it will keep the icons.
So what if I want the background to go back to what it was before originally I switch it to an all black background? just wanted to know first before I mess up and will become undo able. Thanks!

You will have the option to "reset the homescreen" from inside the pictures part of the media app.
