Default Orange UK - Data Charges abroad and using Blackberry as a Modem

Please Login to Remove!

I am on Orange UK PAYG and pay £5 a month for the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) so Internet Access is free up to a prescribed limit.

I have 3 questions:

1) If I access the Internet whilst elsewhere in Europe does the BIS cover me – or will I pay both extra call (roaming?) and data charges?

2) If I use my Blackberry as a Modem away from the UK (via the Blackberry Manager Desktop Software) what is the position then – do I pay both extra call and data charges?

3) Is the answer to Question 2 the same if I use the Blackberry as a Modem only here in the UK?

Thanks for your help. I can’t get hold of anyone sufficiently knowledgeable to answer these questions at Orange!

1. No. You'll pay roaming data charges, just like roaming call charges.

2. Yes. Its still the same data, charged at roaming rates; you're just using it on a large device.

3. Using BB as modem in the UK will be standard data charges, i.e. should be included in BIS data limit. However, Orange may monitor/charge/not allow at all, the ability to tether.

I believe tethering on orange is restricted to the orengeinternet APN which is again restricted to contract customers. PAYG users use the orangewap APN. Roaming BIS prices are set by RIM in the uk not the carriers. I believe it currently to be round a fiver per 24 hours for contract customers. Roaming charges on wap/tcp or any mapping software would bite you HARD while roaming on PAYG. Get a 30 day contract for your trip.

Looks like a scam site to me. I wouldn't go near it.

For someone with a custom Pattern Recognizer title i'm surprised you failed to notice that the user's id is achinaseller and the site in question achinaseller.com

That's why I said what I did. I was giving him the worst PR I could think of. He was posing as a consumer asking for opinions when all he really wanted was web traffic.
