Ok lets put our BB heads together on this and see what we can come up with.. Lets all try and do a little research and see what we can come up with on how to clean fix or what ever we need to do with it. It seems no one knows how this thing works or how it can be cleaned properly. I know we have some smart people here and some with a few conections so lets figure this ouy!!!

I had read that the 8100 has a magnetically implemented trackball (not optical or mechanical). Thus, no cleaning should be needed. Has your trackball quit working or is this a hypothetical post?
^yeah, same as above - Its magnetic so you really shouldn't need to clean it unless your really dirty... Everyone seems to be making a really big deal about this...
Thats what I am trying to figure out... thats the how dos it work part! where did you read that it was magnetic? I would like to see that. This part of the blackberry is the least known about so I thought a thread asking how it works and how to clean it would be a good idea since many people have said that it stops working sometimes or they feel there is something under it causing it to drag and not work properly for being the "new" part on the blackberry and the thing that sets it apart from any other older model nothing has been said about how it works and maintenance for it.......
this is out of C-news
"One concern: I’m curious whether thumb grime might collect over time, gumming up detection of the ball’s rotation. It’s a fading memory in the era of optical sensors, but this problem was common with the ball used to roll a computer mouse. RIM says its use of magnetic, rather than physical, sensors should minimize this risk.
Otherwise, Pearl users also will want to tweak the tension settings for the trackball so it doesn’t spin too freely, overshooting your intended destination"

Yes I want to know how it works as well. If it's magnetic, then how does it flash and flash different colors? I asked this about the Sidekick3 as well..I'm not very techy. =\
I don't have a problem with my trackball yet, but only because I'm extra careful about the trackball because my friend's one is really gross and I'd like to help her out haha (she works in a stock room and gets a lot of dust on it).
it is magnetic if you see my quote above... how it works is your guess but it dos work with magnetic fields somehow Im sure some reasearch on the subject will find some tech ansears but i dont feel like digging tonight. Im sure how ever the ball its self has no lights in it just some LEDS around it on the inside that make it seem as if the ball itself is changing colors
