I don't know about the original poster, but it is useful for typing acronyms (like NASA, IBM, FBI, etc.).
On the other hand there is a nifty little feature in the auto text function that can be used to handle acronyms. Have you ever noticed when you are typing that you don't need to capitalize the word "I". If you type a lowercase "i" then it will automatically change to uppercase as soon as you hit the space bar. This is because there is an "i"->"I" (Specified Case) entry in the autotext.
If you type an acronym a lot then add an autotext entry for it with the "(Specified Case)" option and then you don't even have to shift to type it in the future. I imagine this won't work very well for acronyms that are actually English words, though...
BTW, there are some interesting side effects to their helpful autotext facility. For example, it's hard to type a text message and talk about your "id" - the BB will helpfully change it to "I'd". You also can't say "Mike lets me ride his bike" as it helpfully changes it to "Mike let's me ride his bike" which is wrong. I haven't gotten around to it with my BB, but I usually change things like the "lets" mapping to "letus"->"let's" or some other non-English-word mapping. YMMV
