Default bit of confusion, help please

Please Login to Remove!

in the "How do I wipe the BlackBerry using Jl Cmder?" instructions, this confuses me.

"5. Plug the device into the PC using the USB cord and make sure Desktop Manager is closed
6. Remove the battery from the device

Wipe The Device
1. Wipe the device using Jl_Cmder"

if i remove battery then try to wipe nothing happens, after some time when i place battery back in, device loads up and everything is still there. am i doing something wrong? should i just keep battery in during wipe?

I have always done it with the battery in the device and the device powered on.

Correct. Why are you wiping the device if everything comes up normally? Are you trying to upgrade? Do you have a problem with the device?

You don't need to wipe it then.

Just load the new OS to your PC, delete any old OS off the PC...

That's what I was afraid of. You don't even need to delete old OS's off the PC (if one was ever installed.)

JL_Cmder is NOT required for a simple OS upgrade or downgrade.

A BB myth on this board.

If your gonna downgrade, you need to delete higher versions.

That isn't necessary in all cases. It will make the BB recognizable by the pc when there are other problems.

Yes. You can connect the BB to the computer with the battery removed and it will allow it to connect when it otherwise may not. Usually the Pearl doesn't need this method. The 8700 and the 8800 are notorious for getting stuck in reboot loops and not wanting to connect for long enough to wipe the device.
