Does anyone know if chats across BlackBerry Messenger are secure? Could it be encrypted like the s/mime emails?

BB Messenger chats travel over RIM's secure network, so all traffic is encrypted.

Now, who do you want to be secure from? BB Messenger chats are a pain to log for a BES admin, but it's still available to RIM or law enforcement.

Actually, that's not entirely accurate.
BBM is "scrambled" (RIM's terminology) when using BIS. It's secured to a decent extent, but not really encrypted.
BBM can be encrypted in a BES environment using a peer-to-peer encryption key.

That's not true anymore either.
BBM can be logged quite easily by a BES admin in a BES 5 environment.

I run a Groupwise BES, so my knowledge of BES 5 is zero. That is good to know, I've been asked a few times if we can log BBM and now I have a new answer.

Thanks for your answers.

Penguin3107, how could it encrypted in a BES environment using a peer-to-peer encryption key?

You just need to enable a peer-to-peer encryption key on the BES.
Once that's set, your users will only be able to communicate via PIN/BBM with other users on the same BES... but the traffic will be encrypted.
