Default Default Browser question ?

Please Login to Remove!

OK I know this question has been asked before about the default browser not working and the fact that you need a data plan etc.

I have a 8700v which is locked to Vodafone and I am with Vodafone using PAYG.

I DON'T have a data plan with them

I have downloaded Opera and I can access the internet fine with that

I can use Google maps fine

I can use Google mail fine

But I cannot use the default browser, but what puzzles me is it does not say can't access etc when I try to use the default browser it just says 'REQUESTING' with a bar moving along the bottom but nothing else happens. Is this normal for a locked phone. Only want to use the default browser to download applications instead of using the desktop software all the time is there no way to do this ??

You can't use the BlackBerry Browser without a BlackBerry Data Plan.
You also can't download apps over the air without a BlackBerry Data Plan.

OK so the requesting it keeps saying is just a qwerk and it will always say that.

Supose I can download and install from the desktop software but not from my opera browser were I can browse the net quite happily...

You would think they would just let you do as you want and just charge you for it instead of all this data plan stuff

Why is that then ?

Maybe I am missing something but for those not wanting a data plan surly they could charge by how much you downloaded etc

With NO data plan you may:

* make phone calls
* send/receive text SMS messages
* NOT use any instant messenger program that anyone has found so far
* use the device as a standalone PIM
* NOT send or receive any information over the internet, in any way shape or form, despite what you heard about it being possible

With a generic data plan in addition you may:

* use a third party browser like Opera Mini, but NOT the resident BlackBerry browser
* may get email either via a web interface (using Opera) or other third party app, but NOT BlackBerry push email
* use a number of third party applications that require net access, including some instant messenger programs, as long as they're available to install from DM because:
* canNOT install apps OTA because that requires the resident browser
* canNOT use BlackBerry messenger or do PIN-->PIN messaging

Thanks for that link, so looking at that does that mean my (second hand) blackberry has a generic data plan ?

Not sure what a generic data plan is ( I will search) but I can access the internet using opera and get mail using google mail just can't use the default browser so therefore I can't download anything direct to the blackberry

Being able to download directly is valuable. Are you able to download items through your desktop manager?
