Howdy folks,

Brand new to Smartphones in general and Blackberries in particular. Been lurking on the forums for a few weeks now and just been monkeying around with my 8100 trying to get used to it. Lots of great information here and my head's still swimming trying to make heads or tails of all of it..

Anyway, I am the system admin of a large mail server in my company and have been using BIS to retrieve messages from it successfully. My company also has a bunch number of Exchange servers for their 'corporate' environment and use at least a couple BES servers. I decided to contact one of our Exchange engineers to see if I couldn't also sign onto the BES servers but was told that they will not allow any T-Mobile wireless devices and that I should switch to Cingular, Verizon or Sprint. (none of which have signal coverage at my house)

Is there anything different with T-Mobile devices that would preclude their use on a BES server? or is my IT department simply being difficult'?

They're all the same -- in short. However each company my follow different rules of setting up users.

why would T-mobile offer a seperate BES blackbery plan then? Makes no sence to me

The BES BlackBerry data plan from T-Mobile/Cingular is the same as the BlackBerry data plan from Verizon/Sprint/Nextel. The T-Mobile/Cingular consumer data plan removes the ability for the ability to communicate with a BES server. It makes it cheaper for consumers to get a BlackBerry. Not sure why the others don't offer it too.

Not sure but our company, a fairly large international company changed their attitude towards TMO after a bunch of successful attacks on their network and there had been some bad press public and enterprise, IT mags and such, that didn't make their security look too good in any light compared to the other carriers.

I know when I wanted to get a phone and I had the options of Verizon, Sprint and TMO as my company's relationship with em gets me a nice discount. I decided on TMO because their plan prices are the lowest and I get close to identical coverage in areas I frequent as I do on VZW. When I told 2 IT guys about my gmail being setup on my new Pearl they both almost shouted "now your password is wide open" and began warning me about not keeping sensitive info in my gmail as its my main personal email account now, etc etc...

Maybe they had a point, I dunno but who am I that some hacker will pick me out of the thousands of customers...

The "attacks" were against Sidekick Danger servers. Which are NOT on T-Mobile's network.

I think you got some bad information there. Very bad information.

If anyone has information on T-Mobile's network getting hacked and into people's BlackBerry e-mail account (WHICH ARE ON SERVERS RUN BY RIM) please post them.

Until then, I believe the people who told you that are incorrect.

Ya know I figured... but I wasn't equip'd with any knowledge to argue with em. I think I'm gonna make it a point now to see those two and pull a "oh by the way" ... you're both wrong.

I haven't owned a blackberry before...purchased mine about 40 hours ago and I love it! But I already scratched the battery (don't know how). I already ordered a case and screen guards but they come in Wed. -waits impatiently-
