Default Problems with 8120 Pearl crashing

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there, I'm a new BlackBerry user, I picked up the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 on Orange UK yesterday. I'm pretty impressed with it apart from one major thing: it crashes on me constantly.

The phone seems to be okay for a few hours at a time but will randomly boot me to a black screen and red LED when I'm in calls with people, or doing things such as browsing the internet or sending an e-mail.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this? Is my phone faulty?

I would recommend an immediate phone OS upgrade. After that we can start looking at hardware (if it continues)

Welcome to the forums.

Where did you get the device? Did you get it second hand? What OS is on it (Options > About)?

I got the phone as an upgrade through my current contract with Orange UK (they're my service provider). I updated the OS to the latest one provided by the BlackBerry website for Orange UK users, which is v4.5.0.52 and the problem is persisting.

Any ideas?

Was there an issue with it rebooting prior to the upgrade? Do you have a media card in the device?

Yes, there was an issue. And yes, there's a media card in the device. Should I try formatting or removing it?

If you have a media card in the device, you will need to make a backup of the data you have on there, then format the media card using the phone and then restore your data. If you don't have a media card then I'm not sure what else could be causing it, maybe a faulty battery.

How do I format the media card using the phone?

Go to Option, then you should see an option for media card or memory, if not check within Advanced Options. I don't have a pearl so I don't know the exact menu options.

Found it thanks, and I've formatted. I'll see what happens and report back

If you just got it, I would call your provider and let them know and have them replace it.

Interesting, that normally fixes most of the persons having that issue. Thinking....

Default Any joy with this issue?

Hi, I think I have the same problem you had. Did you manage to solve your problem or did you have to get another one?
Any advice appreciated

I have the same problems as the person who posted here...

(blackberryforums dot com slash) general-8300-series-discussion-curve/165576-help-fourth-replacement-blackberry-same-random-shut-off-problem.html

Sounds like BB OS is running into some issues in 2009. I have never had a single problem with BB until recently. Would love to know what the problem is. Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Default Follow up

Hi,
I also put this thread on the BlackBerry support forum and one of the support guys went through the problem with me. There are some steps there that you may want to try. Unfortunately none of them worked for me and the phone has now gone back to BlackBerry. I will post again if they have any feedback on what the problem was, but I guess if they cannot figure it out they will just replace it. This may or may not solve the problem....

Just tried posting the link but this forum won't let me until I have made 10 posts! So go to the BlackBerry website and go to the support forums. The thread id I posted is 2261.

To be honest, the BB support forum is miles better than this one anyway.

Good luck

Default May have discovered something

Alright, hope this helps someone . This past week I tried everything again because I was on my third BB and didn't want it to go back. I have tried reloading the OS, taking out the memory card (reformatting) and I also contacted TMO to get a new sim card thinking that was the only other thing I didn't change.

However, I have to say when I got my new BB I loaded all the apps (which are only two). I have ETrade app and Pacman. This past weekend I took off ETrade and left Pacman on. Shortly afterward the device rebooted.

I couldn't take it any longer so I deleted Pacman. After two days, there were no reboots. I placed ETrade app back on and still after a few days now, no visible or known reboots. So my thoughts are that it was maybe Pacman. If I experience anything else, I will let you folks know.

Thanks again for everyone's help.
