Mods et al.,

Might we get a Linux User's Corner, akin to the Mac corner? I'm happy to help out, take some reigns or whatever; it's not like we have a lot to discuss, but there are definite tips & tricks and whatnot that are specific to our chosen desktop platform that I feel warrant a small slice of the pie.

Of course, I'm also hoping to foster more traffic around my OS of choice (for over a decade) and increase the knowledge share in regards to BlackBerry usage. It's a bit hard to find linux specific BlackBerry info around, so this would foster a single melting pot for everyone to contribute towards.(*)

My first personal foray (we used 0.99 (?) on the shell server at college) was buying a shiny new Inspiron 7000 ($4000 back then!) around '97 and putting .... RedHat 4.2? 5.2? one of those on it. Shoot we were lucky it booted and could get a 1024x X display working.

That same laptop sits under my stereo to this day running Fedora as a media control center...

FYI... I am now using Suse 10.2 (gnome) on my laptop (it's awesome!)

Got FreeBSD running on the older latop..

What is the hold up with making a program that sync's with Linux? Is there a technical reason why an app can't be made?
I'm new to Linux but I'm thinking if it can be done for an Unix based OS like OSX it should be able to be done on Linux.

It's a little offtopic, but yeah it's technical -- the closest project to that goal is Barry (barry.sf.net). The utility 'bcharge' works fine to at least provide 500mA charging power now under linux, but with the Pearl in particular there's a technical problem figuring out how to interface around the usb-storage.

Thanks man -- I'm just doing the ol' grass roots groundswell approach, it only makes sense to make a forum if we see enough people wanting it. It looks like since I started pimping this thread in my .sig a lot of lurkers have come out.

haha thanks! I can't take credit for the design, it's a stock theme offered for free on wordpress.com. But the content is all my brain.

That newest post I wrote on disabling the GDM login beep has become quite popular, I thought it was just me. Looks like tons of people were looking for that solution -- I'd be happy to provide more if y'all let me know what you need.

Sorry to take this thread off course however I have a question for you Linux Gurus. I'm trying to setup a FTP site on an old box running Ubuntu 6.10? (Edgy, whatever version that is... sorry still learning). It's currently set up with Samba as a mapped network drive to my laptop however I'd like to be able to access it anywhere via FTP.

I have the server set up with Proftpd and am able to access the ftp site from that box however whenever I try to access it from my laptop (connected to the the same network with a linksys router) I get a 'server cannot be found' error.

I am a total newb when it comes to Linux but am wanting to learn. I know I just have something not set right in the proftpd.conf so I'm wondering if one of you guys have been successful at doing this and if so if you could walk me through a bit more.

I have read countless walkthroughs however I know I'm missing something.

Shoot me an PM if you can help and if you need more specifics. Thanks a ton in advance!

What ideally I would like to achieve is to set this up, access it via the web anywhere and set it so I am the only one who can access it.

@paulbblc - hey I know you shot me a PM, but I like discussing this stuff in public so the lurkers can hear. I'll keep it short and succinct, hopefully.

Primer: MS networking (Samba/SMB) is a broadcast protocol, you don't need DNS in order for a client to find a server. It's avery chatty -- when machines come on the wire they litterally scream their presence to the rest of the network. FTP, however, is a strict TCP/IP networking - it requires a client and machine knowing how to find each other, which is usually done via DNS on a "real" network.

So I'll assume you're on a NAT (fake, 10.* or 192.168.*) network at home, sitting behind a little linksys or whatever. You don't have an internal DNS to do host mapping for you, so you have to do it on either machine directly.

1) set the IP address of server to be something static, do not use DHCP. For mine I use 192.168.1.100 because it's easy to remember. (I have a little home laptop acting as a server underneath my stereo system - runs samba, proftpd, etc.)

2) on the client laptop, add an entry to your local hosts file to find it. Under linux this would be the file /etc/hosts, under Windows it's c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. On Windows the file may not exist and you have to create it. Inside this file, you want to add one line:

192.168.1.100   myserver

...where 'myserver' is of course whatever you want to call it.

At this point, you should be able to FTP to the machine now as a name from your laptop -- you could also just use that IP address. In order to access it from outside your home, you'll have to go into your router and set up "Port Forwarding" to forward ports 20 and 21 (tcp/udp) to IP 192.168.1.100, e.g.
