Default Is BES for Exchange required?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm a blackberry n00b. I have been searching and reading here, but haven't answered all of my questions.

I am the IT director at my company. We have an Exchange 2007 server and several different kinds of cell phones that get corporate email from it. Right now we have 3-5 users who have blackberry's. I don't have BES.

The one phone I have been looking at is new, a Storm, just purchased last weekend.

1. The reconcile function seems to do nothing.
2. None of his folders show up besides Inbox. He has created several personal folders but they aren't visible on the phone.
3. When he deletes a message on the phone, it doesn't delete in his Outlook, but does work the other way around when the phone is connected to his PC.
4. His calendar on the phone doesn't update his Outlook calendar. This may be an issue caused by #1 above.
5. He can't seem to search for messages, probably because the folders aren't showing up.
6. Once the folders show up, will he be able to move messages from his inbox into those folders using just his phone?

Do I need BES for Exchange to accomplish all of this? Or can it be accomplished with his Desktop Manager and/or some other method?

Does the BES setup something like 'push' where his email will arrive on the phone quicker than it does now?

I apologize in advance for the newb questions. Thanks.

BES is push email.
BES syncs over the air all the other things you mentioned.

So his folders will show up with BES?

And he'll be able to search for emails in them?

Thanks.

Yes, but only new items.

Yes if on newer OS on HH.

Is there any way to get the old messages to show up? For instance can I create a new temp folder, move all messages from one folder into this temp folder, then move them into the old folder after everything is setup on BES? Wouldn't they show up then? Or does it go strictly off of the email date?

I don't understand the 'newer OS on HH' comment. Do you mean a newer OS on the phone (hand held?)? It's a brand new phone, just purchased last weekend. What is the minimum OS that it needs? Its a Bold.

Thanks for all of the help.

It is not a full email client and only poulate 14 days of old emails default is 7.
Think of it as a email NOW device.

Bold has newer OS.
