Default How to take existing Jad/jar files and post them to be OTA'd

Please Login to Remove!

Is there any easy way to take existing jad/jar files and just post them somewhere for OTA installation?

Or do you have to change the jad files somewhat? I'd like to not have to go into the JDE and create the cod files for them? Most of these apps are just coming from midlets.

Any tips?

You need to make sure the webserver has its MIMEtypes properly configured, then it should work. You don't want the .JAD files to download as if they were text files.

Can you point me to the doc that specifies the specifics to what Mimetypes jad and jar need to be set to? I'll have my admin modify our Apache.conf

Thanks for your quick reply.

headtailgrep,

If the web server is properly configured by default, which Apache appears to be, then there shouldn't be a problem.

I had problems, however, trying to put .jad/.jar files on an arbitrary website, so there appears to be a webserver configuration element to it -- the files would stubbornly download as text files full of garble. This was because the MIMEtype was not correct. At the minimum, I think it has to be "application/x-octet-stream" instead of "text/plain".

I found information on how to do this:
http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/e..._3/index5.html

The web server MIMEtype definitely needs to be configured, but I erred on which one. It's actually:

.jad files
text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor

.jar files
application/java-archive

From the RIM dev docs:

Users can only download .jar files if they access the network using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server with
the Mobile Data Service is enabled. The Mobile Data Service converts .jar files to the .cod file format that the
handheld requires. If users access the network using a WAP gateway, they can only download .cod files.

eradis, not anymore. Outdated documentation for Rogers users at least.

Rogers and T-Mobile users can now download .jad/.jar files without a BES.

Yes as of last Friday. Thats because of the MDS is being hosted by the carrier now - i.e. full html browser without corporate BES/MDS. So those principles still hold true :D

That would be MDS built into Blackberry Web Client 4 carrier server software wouldn't it? If so, they need to clarify that to include that, since that's not the standard-issue Blackberry Enterprise Server, isn't it?

What is the name of the software that carriers use to run the BWC? That one has no Exchange functionality as far as I know, right?

Thats exactly it, and yes no email ( exchange or other ) directly from the carrier. Basically they stripped out and built a mini-MDS at the gateway. The exact same principle as Reqwireless except the transcoding server( i.e MDS) is contained within the carrier system.
