Now that RIM has firmed up a launch date, I can make plans for my upgrade. I will gladly wait until February to get my new BlackBerry.

Anyone have any details on how much the new server software will cost? I'm guessing that you have to upgrade your entire system to use the new devices. Is that right? That's going to be a tough sell to the CFO. We may have to stick with the old system for our overseas users.

You will need to run BES 10 to support BB 10 and keep the old infrastructure to support the older BB devices.
Licenses *may* be free (RIM is coming in tomorrow to explain it).
And yes, a very tough sell.

I am interested in knowing what RIM says about licensing as well. This is tough sell for us as well and may be the straw the broke the camel's back for us. Depending on the costs involved, we may switch completely away from BlackBerry going forward.

Not according to the enthusiasts at CB. No one would ever switch completely away.
We are in the same boat.

Re: BlackBerry 10 Launch Event On January 30, 2013 To Detail First Two BB10 Smartphon
The following are the notes I wrote down while attending a Blackberry 10 demo given by RIM a couple of weeks ago. Thought it might be an interesting read for someone. Keep in mind they are just my hastily written notes while they were talking.
Blackberry Enterprise Services 10 - BES 10 and Blackberry 10 handhelds not java based anymore.
- New protocols are used to enable multiple devices for one user.
- Fusion is currently a separate install on a separate server. With BES 10 it’s all in one, on one server.
- BES 10 server and handhelds use the QNX operating system. It’s also already used by cars/vending machines/ health care equipment etc. Opens massive opportunity for application development.
- Uses active sync instead of MAPI. By itself active sync is not secure. RIM has wrapped its encryption and compression around active sync.
- Manages user instead of device
- Different flavors of BES will be available
- Basic IT policy package and additional policies available for government and finance
- Will be featured at BB World May 2013
- Existing handhelds cannot be upgraded to version 10 because of they use different protocols, but versions 6 & & bb’s can be added to BES 10
- Playbooks will be able to be upgraded to bb10 because they have the QNX OS
Licensing - Can trade in existing licenses at no charge
- Server components are a free download
- Cals are completely different in BES10
- IOS and android licenses need to be purchased new
Cals are per device
Support is per user
Communication: device – BES10 – ActiveSync
Similar to the communication flow that is used with MAPI
TSupport - One number to phone for all devices
- RIM tech support will include support for all blackberry, iOS and android devices.
- iOS and android device support will be for device management on the BES.
- Support isn’t charged [per device anymore 9 – its per user and it doesn’t matter how man devices the user has.
Mobile fusion - Drag/drop Policies, Wi-Fi configuration and apps
Device Compliance - Specify what action to take if jail broken
- Alerts for violations
- Apps pushed out – is user reuses, shows as alert
BYOD - Secures work from personal
- Will wipe only work perimeter when user leaves
- Separate app worlds for personal and work
- User receives password and activates, workspace is setup, and then user is asked to setup password for it.
Blackberry 10 handheld - Unified inbox hub
- All messaged in one inbox, but can filter/block work. (?)
- Swipe to change from work to personal space.
- Different backgrounds to differentiate them
- Work space shows picture of brief case
- NFC charges for visa and MasterCard swiping
- No buttons or keys –uses finger movements like the playbook
- No separate email contacts etc icons – unified communications center (hub)
- FULL Flash and HTML 5 support
- Calendar – growing numbers. The busier the day, the larger the numbers
- Gesture based.

Re: BlackBerry 10 Launch Event On January 30, 2013 To Detail First Two BB10 Smartphon
I wish blackberry the best of luck however it is hard for me to argue that we have to do all this to make it somewhat equivalent to the Iphone, Exchange 2010, Activesynch and Maas360. I see us migrating away and I dont have the mental energy or internal capital to change it. Our count has gone from 150 to 90 and what could turn it around.
