You mention a "stable" upgrade...is your device crashing or not stable? The BB OS is notoriously stable. I've owned Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices too, and they have NOTHING on the BlackBerry OS. I'd say unless your device is malfunctioning or crashing all the time, to leave it alone.

no, nothing like that...my OS is smooth...everything is great with it. Just wondering if .71 or .73 is worth it? anyone know what differences there are?

Maybe one day you need to be on AIS or TrueMove...

ok, I'm a little confused..i went on the RIM software sticky thread, chose Cingular/AT&T and picked the "Pearl 8100c" (wasn't sure if I should chose Main Slate" or "Red"???)...anyway, here's the file:

Package Version: 4.2.0.89
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.2.0.73
* Software Platform: 2.2.0.41
* File name: 8100M_PBr4.2.0_rel89_PL2.2.0.41_A4.2.0.73_Cingular .exe
* File size: 68.02MB

Which do you go by?..the package version number or the application? Would this one be the .73 OS then? On my Pearl under "about" it says this:

v4.2.0.67 (Platform 2.2.0.39)

I'm assuming I'm running the .67? Can anyone clarify this? cheers..

It makes no difference what carrier released the OS. You can load it on any Pearl.

Make sure the latest Desktop Manager is installed. Currently 4.2 SP1
Download the above linked OS. Then double click on the file you downloaded to install it to the PC.
Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
Plug in BB, open Desktop Manager and it should prompt you to upgrade.

The installation will appear to hang for up to 20 minutes at times with a spinning hourglass....be patient, and let it go.

Good luck.
What impact do other applications such as BBAlerts and Soft Reset have on the OS upgrade proceedure? I assume Is it necessary to also copy the application files over to the new OS folder located in the shared/loader files subdirectory so that they can be re-installed.

The first step of the process is a backup - including applications. The last step is a restore. Although the application will be restored, if it does not backup data - like BBWeather - it will have to be reentered. You do not need to copy any folders.
