So this has been touched on before, and I've heard it's possible by setting something like a proxy up on the blackberry via a java app, and then having a driver of some sorts on your PC, but does anyone know if that's actually been followed through with or if anyone has done anything with that?

Unfortunately its a gold mine that is yet untapped. Hopefully someday a third party app will do it or RIM themselves. I think that if it were possible, carriers wouldnt really want it as it would use up quite the bandwidth.

The carriers will probably be fine with such a thing getting added to blackberries, but it will probably only appear on new hardware so you have to sign up for yet another contract with them and secondly they will not be offering the same tariffs as they do with existing blackberries since the unlimited blackberry plans are priced based on the useage of the very network efficient blackberry and not somebody trying to use it as a modem.

Actually how my carrier deals with the network usage is that the metered service is just for the email usage and the rest of the network useage is unlimited. That's how nextel does it and I thought the other carriers were the same way but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I've read some posts on other boards by Mark Rejhon about this specific issue. Maybe he'll chime in and share his knowledge. He seems to be very optimistic about the issue.

I wouldn't think it'd be too hard for someone who knows Java on theses systems... The hard part would be getting a client peice written for the desktop as well... Then you have to have somethign that works with all windows versions and all that other crap...

Sigh... Maybe some day...

I bet the push will be higher with the carriers picking up the MDS side of the business.... Now people won't need a BES server to access packet data or GPRS
