Our 3rd party provider have told us that it is no longer possible to get the BES 4.1 software direct from RIM for free and that we instead have to purchase it from the network provider (in our case Vodafone UK) for the princely sum of 850 (approx. 1600 USD).
I am just wandering if this is standard for everyone else or if I am missing a trick somewhere.

If you moved your connections across to us I'd give you the upgrade for free, and we could upggrade some of your 7290s and 8700s to newer models which would be of benefit. We're an O2 / VF service provider (i.e. we own the billing relationship) and actually have a clue about 'berries.
