I am new to the blackberry, and Ive noticed that there is a difference between hitting the end/hang-up button and actually closing the program through its menus.

Does this effect the battery life? I opened "switch applications" the other day and realized that there were a ton of things that were still open. I could then close these programs and they would stop appearing on this list, which leads me to believe that it would have an effect on battery life.

Can anybody larify what the difference between closing and ending is?

I think you already answered your own question.
The difference is that hitting the End Call button doesn't actually close the application. It just takes you back to the home screen.

Yes, leaving programs running in the background will affect battery life, free device memory, and handheld performance.
It's best to close applications that you aren't using when you're finished with them.

Gotcha.

Ive also noticed that certain applications don't seem to close. The calls aplication, browser, blackberry messenger, and message applications stay on the "switch application" menu even if i attempt to close them. Am I going about closing them the wrong way, or do they just stay open?

Those are always running. You can't close them.

I recall the AT&T sales person telling me specifically that if you open the browser that you have to hit the "back" button to close the application instead of hitting the "end" button. This would mean the application is still running. I find it annoying if I am web surfing to have to go back.

But my battery has been serving me well.

Do you guys know which applications run all of the time?

My blackberry switch applications list includes the blackberry messenger, messages, home screen (duh), recent calls, the browser, and a third party program I installed called MyAlarm (which works pretty well, but the interface can be finicky with the trackball).

Yeah, the ones that you can't close.
