Default GPS for Pearl - Which Bluetooth Service?

Please Login to Remove!

I did some searching and am still looking for an answer to the following question:

My company linked, BES enabled BlackBerry Pearl has a pretty strict security policy on it. I do not want to try to mess around with this, and I wonder if the proper bluetooth service is allowed by my policy so that a bluetooth GPS will work with my unit. I can use headsets and handsfree via bluetooth, but things like file transfer are not permitted, for example.

Does anyone know which bluetooth service must be enabled on the BlackBerry to allow me to use a bluetooth GPS receiver? I haven't bought a receiver yet for fear that it might not be permitted to interface with my unit.

Thanks

Hi jbramhall,

actually there is no service you need to enable. As the Pearl supports a lot of Bluetooth profiles you just need to pair your Bluetooth GPS receiver with your Pearl and start the GPS application. Every Bluetooth GPS receiver uses the Serial Port Profile (Bluetooth profile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) for transferring data over Bluetooth. So you can check whether this is allowed by your IT policy or not. I am not sure if the support of several profiles is adjustable by a BES. It would be great if you come back to me if you know more on this.

Some time ago I wrote an article on "BlackBerry and GPS" which might be interesting for you. It does not cover the concrete Bluetooth GPS pairing process but it gives you an overview of what is possible if you want to use GPS features on your BlackBerry.

I just bought then returned the TeleNav recommended Bluetooth GPS receiver. It looks like it required a COM connection to talk with my 8100, and my IT policy does not allow for such connections. The devices would pair, but there was no option to connect the 2 after pairing, I assume because of this restriction in the IT policy governing my use of the 8100.
