im a heavy 8310 user. i read a few threads on the 8900 and studied it a litte. they keep saying that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. fromwhat i understand, the only differences are

1. faster processor
2. better screen (which doesnt really matter unless you sream videos
3. on board memory
4. and a better camera

is there anything else that im missing?? im trying to weigh the advantages/disadvantages of getting an unlocked one

i have the original 8100 Pearl so upgrading is a big deal for me. i'd get not only all the features you mentioned but WiFi (finally!) and GPS.

i do, however, tell my friends who have Curves not to upgrade and wait for either a GSM Storm or the Palm Pre.

what is the basis for you telling them to stay? basic what im asking, is what are the downsides to the 8900 that one should be aware of when considering an upgrade

The only disadvantages I see as of this moment, would be lack of themes. It's only a matter of time before that is no longer an issue.

The only real downside is the lack of 3g. However, your 8310 is not 3g capable either.

Another note - the 8900 will give you both GPS and WIFI which I believe that your 8310 doesn't.

that is true. and 3gisnt in my geographical arearight now anyways. i can deal with edge and WI-FI would be a nice Ad-on

I guess it depends on what you mean by branding. The 8900 comes with a pre-installed MyFaves (T-Mobile specific) application which can be hidden if you don't use it.

And, on the exterior, there is that MyFaves logo on the back of the device near the bottom.

yeah i ws talking about teh device (my-faves indentatin) i figured there would be. it sounds like a great phone. im tryin to sell off my curve 8310 with the invisbe shield and grab one of those guys

You that the screen doesn't matter unless you're streaming videos then you haven't seen it in action. It looks great for everything. I sold my friend on this phone for that reason alone

don't forget the browser. The screen isn't just for streaming video. You can read so much more text that it's a real functional advantage.

Same position your in.. i bought my pearl the day it came out.. and haven't changed since b/c it has done well for me.. but i need to try something new and looking at the size of the javelin it looks like this is a winner.

Question I have Bold or the 8900?

I have a 8300 device. I am pretty happy with it. I will upgrade at some point. With my usage I've been told to go to the Bold as I won't have memory problems anymore. I do want more choices so I am waiting.

Any thoughts from existing Curve users?

The speed is a big plus for me. I think the keys on the keyboard are slightly bigger so texting is easier than before

8320 Curve owner (as well as 8100 Pearl). I'll get it because of:
1. Screen. You gotta have a high res screen to make web pages and attachments easier to read.
2. GPS I have a TomTom but it's cool to have this on a phone too.
3. Camera I use it more than I thought I would just to show people stuff at events I go to.
4. 3.5mm headphone jack (Pearl is 2.5, a pain to use the adapter)
5. Browser: Again I don't use it a lot but the 8100 is crummy and the 8320 is minimally better. The review say the 8900 is still not in the iPhone league but any improvement is a plus.
As for the faster processor and more onboard memory I don't really have a problem with speed of my phones but it's probably something I'll like once I have it. I don't get 3g where I live, so that's a moot issue.

Bold only has 128MB for apps vs 256MB on the 8900. As for storage, you can easily pickup a very large micro SDHC card and add up to 16GB of extra space.

The biggest advantage the Bold has over the 8900 is 3G. I wonder how big of a real-world difference this actually makes however.

Almost any recently introduced BBs will be "better" than the original Pearl. I too was in the same boat. I received the 8900 last night finally replacing my Pearl, which was being held together by a rubber band.

I'm glad to switch to a full keyboard and the 8900 is not much wider than the Pearl.

Same here as well. Had the Pearl 8100 for 2.5 years and finally something worth upgrading to at T-Mobile! Only thing I don't like is the width. Other than that, everything is better.

So far I love the 8900. I had a bold but was unhappy with the size and weight! I dont care much for 3G, so this device is perfect for me.
