Default Vodafone uk BIS over wifi, using my data allowance.

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, I have a 9300 (OS6) on vodafone in the uk, we have suresignal and wifi at home. My phone automatically uses the wifi connection for my BIS connection when at home, I have just recieved my first bill and it shows 26mb of data usage for the last week. I usually only use the phone for browsing/youtube etc at home as I assumed that when it was connected to my wifi, (data allowance I'm already paying 'sky' for) it wouldn't come off my data plan, but it is! has anybody else had this problem or know of a solution apart from rolling back to OS5 and having the option to choose wifi only for the browser. I did do a few searches, but I can't find anything specific to my problem on the forum or the vodafone help boards. My brother has a 9700, also on vodafone pay monthly, with no blackberry services, and his phone uses the wifi and no data usage appears on his bill at all.

The only way to guarantee that the device won't use the mobile network when you are using wifi and do not want to use the mobile network is to turn the mobile network off. The downside, of course, is that if you do not have UMA or wifi calling you will also be disabling the phone.

Hi, thanks for your reply. If I turn mobile network off my BIS still uses wifi, it says in the service status that it is connected by wifi, hence I can't understand why vodafone are taking the data from my allowance.

I'm assuming you don't pay for BIS data that travels over your wifi connection. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing your bill would be much higher if that was your carrier's policy. However, ask your carrier.

That said, if I'm correct, there is data traffic occuring over the mobile network while you are also connected to wifi. Most data is over wifi at these times, but some is over the mobile network. This has been discussed on the forum and if you search you will find at least confirmation of the fact, though maybe not a satisfying answer as to why.

Suffice it to say you must turn off the mobile network to be sure all data is on wifi.

Ah right thanks! I'll keep an eye on the usage, vodafone don't seem too helpful when I asked them, I'll read the posts too as suggested, just got a bit concerned as I've sent a fair few tunes over bbm and my vodafone account takes a couple of days to show usage online. Thanks for your reply.
