My former manager was showing me his handheld today and mentioned that the default ringtones' volume was rather quiet, even on high. Anyone else have and 8700 and an 8100 and can compare the volume levels (or remembers what an 8700 sounds like). On the 8700, if I play something like the Alarm_Antelope.mid ringtone on High, it's extremely loud (REALLY loud). My former manager let me hear his, on High, and it sounded almost like my Low level (possibly in bween Low and Normal).

Also, the voice commands female prompt voice was VERY low. Honestly, I had to stick my ear right up to the back of the phone to hear it. Anyone else have this? I did have some background noise (a rather loud IBM server being configured on my desk), but I would think that'd be best for simulating real-life experiences (wind/car-noise while driving, etc).

Did the background noise affect your voice commands or just hearing the prompt? I've actually had no issues hearing the voice prompt, but have mainly been in quieter environments.

My mp3 ringtones on low volume are louder than some of the 8700's in the office, but there are some 8700's that have really loud mp3 tones that compare to my regular tone on the 8100.

Background noise didn't appear to affect the voice commands, to be honest. We had some of the midi-based ringtones comparing them from an 8700g (.466 I believe) with the 8100 ringtones - definitely could tell a BIG difference.

I have both phones. The 8100 is definitely a much quieter phone. Kinda sucks in a louder environment. My fiance couldn't hear it ring when I was calling her in the mall. The 8700 is loud as hell. I love it, the notifications on that are second to none. 8100 is super small so I guess some comprimises had to be made.

I've been using the 8100 for about 2 weeks now. Being the ST fan that I am, I am using a variety of trek related chirps & beeps as my ringtones, etc. While in "holster" and out, the combination of "high" volume setting and the pitch of the tones I've selected seem to be sufficient in most places I've come across.

Those places are everywhere from a normal office environment, to my car (window down), to the soccer field, and while mowing the lawn (electric lawn mower).

I don't believe the "Classic Phone" ringer has changed between the 8700 and the 8100, so it's a good one to use to compare...and I found that my 8100 is just a bit louder with it than some of the 8700s...but not very much.

Let me start by saying that I do not have an 8100...yet!

I remember when I first got my 8700c last November, using the Cingular OS (which still hasn't been updated). The notification volume was average, but it suffered from the speakerphone-volume-level bug. After upgrading to Bharti and most recently Telstra, the notification volume is annoyingly loud.

To any 8700 users that have experienced both the "normal" volume level at product launch and the "extreme" volume level with OS upgrades: how does the 8100 compare? Somewhere in between?

i have both and the 8700 is definatly louder ... what i have done is used "audacity" to make ringtones and turn up the gain it does help but you can only go so far before you hear a crack

Volume is around 40-50% lower, and vibrate is about 50% lighter...

My 8100 is definitely quieter than my 8700 was. I had to boost the gain on all the mp3 tones that i had made for the 8700 just to be sort or comparable on the 8100 and the vibrate is also lighter. Any chance these thing could be fixed in an OS update or is it speaker limitations?

Voice commands - I had to return my first 8100 as defective. I had NO problems with my voice commands - either the level or the ability for my 8100to understand me. My newer 8100 voice command's are MUCH lower in volume and it dosn't understand a word I say. Any ideas?

Can anyone tell me how to turn down the ringtones on my 8700g (4.01)? They are just too dang loud for professional environments I work in, plus I forget to turn off the custom ringtones and when a buddy calls, I have it programmed to say, "I'm Rick James, Biatch", which again...for professional forums, is quite embarassing.

-I tried to use speakerphone, turn the volume way down, then end call, but ringer volume is still the same.
-I also turned the profile to low volume.

Any other ideas?

My wife's pearl was extremely low for voice commands while mine was actually pretty loud. Than a few days later, she was using the voice command and we noticed it was loud like mine all of a sudden. We did not make any changes to the settings or anything. Overall this phone is good but the quality seems like it could be a little better in some areas.

Okay, for everyone having questions about the Voice Activated Dialing volume... what gives (so much hatred going around!!)? Have you checked your settings? I have the pearl and gave my 8700 to my boyfriend. IMHO, the Pearl is much better because of its compact size and ease of use. Yes, the vibrating alert isn't as STRONG, then again, it's a smaller phone and do you need to simulate an AED to alert you that you're receiving a message or call? Personally, I think it's better this way.

As for the VAD: If you go to MENU--> OPTIONS--> Voice Dialing--> Name Playback Volume--> (press down on the trackball/pearl) and change the volume to the desired level.

Another way to increase the volume WITHOUT going into the OPTIONS menu is click the VAD button on the phone (it's the one with the dots on the left side of the phone if you have not changed your button defaults) and as the "VOICE" begins to speak, increase the volume using the volume buttons on the right side to the desired volume level.

In terms of the VAD not catching, you can again go into your voice activated dialing options menu and change the sensitivity down to -3 (Reject Less). Also, when you originally put in your SIM card, if you did not go through the SETUP WIZARD and copy all the entries to your Address Book, it will not recognize your entries, I don't believe. When I first got mine, I skipped the SETUP WIZARD and I couldn't get the VAD to work for the life with me. When I called BB Support, they told me the problem was because I hadn't gone through the set up to copy over the Address Book.
