My challenge is dealing with users who may not have good command of the English language. Often their grammar affects the meaning. I then have to speculate.

grammar plays essentially a huge part!
i've read some posts and haven't been able to decipher what the user is trying to say. and when you DO answer... it turns out to be the wrong one..because they were trying to say something completely different. it does get frustrating after a point..and these lose all control. kaboom.

Good point. Definite advantage here if you are exposed to English on a constant basis. I suppose for some they can access a site in their home language

Another point is to use punctuation and good sentence structure. Also, people sometimes write their posts like they are texting. Drives me nuts.

I have undergrad students who do that also. They get points off!

When I am on wap, the box is a bit small, so I am sure I am guilty of punctuation at times. I work with master's and doctoral students and is an issue at that level too

Lunk, when do you EVER say anything coherent?

secondly, i'm guilty of punctuations.. sometimes. i try to use basic grammar and simple sentence constructions. and somehow, lunk always manages to change it around! is my grammar that bad?

I would like to give this a bump, as well as ask about the rules.

Do we have a rule against members randomly pm'ing other members to ask questions instead of posting those questions in the forum for all to see?

(Only asking as it happened to me today)

I will typically ask the person to post their question in the forums so that others can chime in with help (since I'm nowhere close to knowing it all).

see it just makes sense, if there is a problem that could potentially be shared with the forum members, which might benefit all the members, then why should PM be a source? i reckon that those kinda help questions should be publicly available for all members.

I agree, but rule 2 MUST be followed for this to be effective.

to this thread. I too am really getting annoyed with the lack of respect and overall decency of this forum. One particular rule i have seen broken is rule 25, oddly enough, by the mods sometimes... hmmm...
