Understood. I always thought that we should be able to use everything advertised.
What can you do to workaround the GPS issue?

I care, because this topic has been discussed to death already and it's now misplaced within this forum.
Misinformation causes confusion for new members who might not be familiar with this topic, so if new users think they can enable GPS by contacting RIM or Verizon... then they're just wasting their own time and receving false hope based on the bad info they've read.
If users wish to voice their displeasure with Verizon's practices... then perhaps the 'Rants & Raves' forum would be better suited for that type of thread.
It is, in fact, why that area was put in place.

I was on the VW website checking my minutes and a box came up in the center of the page and asked me if I wanted to enter a chat with a live representative. So I thought what the heck, ill ask about the GPS.

haha, from reading that conversation, sounds like you were talking to a computer. seriously...that's some pretty retarded AI right there for you lol. honestly, i would never chat with a representative online. ignore the fact that this issue will NOT be resolved with an in-store crazy yelling session...
however, if you have other issues, your chances of getting it resolved in store are MUCH better than over the phone. you are surprised how much leverage a manager of a store has. they are able to credit, give you free phones, discount new phones, give you free accessories. verizon for some odd reason, had a computer glitch and charged us for all nights and weekends. our bill was $1,112.83 . the verizon rep on the phone said there was no problem with our plan and we simply went over our minutes. i told her that we have night and weekend minutes and she said that she was sorry, but that the online bill shows that we went over our monthly usage allowance minutes. infuriated, i walked into a store and demanded that i speak with the manager. i brought the bill in and showed it to him and he said that for some ODD reason, on our plan it says we don't have night and weekend minutes but it doesn't make any sense b/c we upgraded our plan 1 1/2 years ago and all plans have had night/weekend minutes for the past 4 or 5 years. he credited our account. i questioned verizon's ability to "uphold a contract" which i signed for. in other words, i signed a contract stating that i would get these services for 2 years, yet verizon, had a breach of contract with me by eliminating night and weekend minutes. i know they have a clause that says they can do what they want, but they have to notify you. well, they never notified me so in the end they did break it. i told the mananger that i am furious that verizon could pull something like this, even if it was a computer glitch...they shouldn't have computer glitches changing LOCKED CONTRACTS. he offered his apologies and threw in a leather case and car charger for each of our 4 phones on my family.
besides that little incident...Verizon has been great lol

Off Topic, but your post just made me chuckle, as I had a Sprint Moto Q and couldn't MMS and a friend of mine had the VZW MotoQ and was sending me pix left and right from hers. When she showed me what she was doing, it was sending an MMS - which Sprint didn't have. Makes me chuckle as when I got the 8830 with VZW I was thinking, cool I can send a picture - but nope. I'm not upset, as I didn't do the research on the MMS, but your post just made me chuckle.
Sorry to go off topic.

well all I know is I have a $12-15k per year account at Sprint that I'm currently shopping. And the Verizon rep I'm working with was sitting all fat and happy giving me a good deal on service thinking he had a slam dunk. I then hit him with the crippling of the phone thing, especially when I saw him flat out lie to a customer about the gps (well more so not tell the whole truth), and said it'll probably be a deal breaker because we do a lot of traveling and don't have cars with nav so going with the BB's was one of the incentives. And knowing it's built in and that you disabled it just makes it worse considering the other two carriers don't. We'll see how that goes. I'd personally rather fight it out with Sprint and have them fix their billing issues before I jump ship to a company that practices business that way. Not saying Sprint is perfect, but you need to pick your battles.
As for some of the negativity in this thread. I think people have a right to complain about a company that practices this way. And I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that the phone retails for what it does because of everything inside. If they choose to disable that feature, then I don't want to pay for it. Knock an extra $50 off the phone. And when they do come out with their Nav and unlock it for that purpose, I can imagine there will be people trying to create a hack to allow third party software usage.
If it wasn't for the complaining of a few specific Treo 700p users, there would be no public admission of the known hardware caused firmware problems and no maintenance release to fix them. Though the MR was far from perfect, it wouldn't have existed if people didn't complain.

I am done with VZW. Too many years of lack of top-notch phones or late arrivals. Plus when they finally do arrive they screw it all up by disabling features, and generally making it difficult to use all the features in the device.
It looks like VZW is being run by accountants, so concerned about milking every penny. Thats always a mistake - they will kill the customers to save the cost of the air their breathing.
I am switching to Sprint - and I encourage others to as well… lucky for me my contract ends soon. Sprint roams on Verizon CDMA when you are out of range of their network, their phones have a lot less features turned off, and they generally have a more forward looking dev team. They are even giving the finger to the Street and going ahead and building a WiMax network.
VZW: i cant wait for 700Mhz and open access… good luck.
