I don't have the data plan anymore, but when I did, I downloaded a custom mp3 for SMS notification. If I perform the Cingular upgrade, will I lose this?

some older versions of code lost the added ringtones, I lost many. The 8700 so far has kept all provided a backup is done.

There are in your Content Store which can be backed up and restored using desktop manager.
