If your pictures are distorting when you resize, you're probably having aspect ratio problems. There's probably a check box on the resize dialog box that reads "Maintain aspect ratio", or something like that. Check that box, then resize so the picture is the correct size in one dimension and bigger than you want it in the other. Then, just crop off the excess to get the correct size.
