Cropping = Altering
The right thing to do would be to ask the author if they'd allow you to make such changes to their work, in addition to getting their permission to make changes and redistribute.
This isn't rocket science.

How do you know? You never got permission from the creator of the work, and up until a few minutes ago, you didn't even know who the creator was.
My points are very simple.
If you choose to modify someone else's work... get their permission first.
If you choose to distribute someone else's work... get their permission first, and credit them.
