Default Tmobile Unlimited Call and wifi

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

I will be purchasing a 8220 BB Flip and Tmobile unlimited call plan. No data plan will be purchased.

I have read in some posts how to switch browser settings to use wifi. Great! I'll be using Opera 4.2, the basic BB Browser, or try boltbrowser.

I have also read that when you enable WI-FI on the Blackberry Flip, it turns off your TDMA, GSM, or CDMA phone service until you switch it back.

Is this true?

I will not be making any UMA calls over any wifi connection or Tmobile Hot Spot.

With free and secure wifi access points accessible to me all day long, I don't want to pay $50/mo for a data plan.

Not true. You have the option of setting your connection preference to:
- Mobile network only
- Mobile network preferred
- Wifi only
- Wifi preferred

So if you have wifi preferred on, it will use your regular mobile signal, and it if finds a wifi spot, it'll switch over to UMA.

Tmobile is GSM BTW.

Default Uma

Thanks for the reply.

Let's say I select WIFI ONLY on the device.

I should be able to surf the web and make and receive UMA calls while doing this with any secure or free wifi connection. Right?

I just want absolute clarity on this issue.

Of course, when I'm leaving home, office, or coffee shop, I'll switch back to Mobile Network (GSM) only.

Yes. With WIFI only, it tells the phone you want to use wifi and nothing else.

Is there a reason why wouldn't want to go with wifi preferred? That way you don't have to bother with switching when you leave home, office, coffee shop, etc.

No reason.

I haven't bought the phone yet. Picking it up this afternoon.

I'll try those options you provided and see which works best without a data plan.

I'll attempt to install a couple web browers (opera 4 and boltbrowser) to see how they work besides the BB Browser. I'd like to access and use my gmail over wifi only. I'll probably need to hunt for service books for some the features and apps I'm installing. I'm sure there will be a few snags or disappointments.

Thank you so much for you help. Much appreciated.

As a point of information, BIS unlimited on Tmo is only $24.99, including 400 messages. That includes unlimited data. With all that free and secure WIFI you speak of, you might want to lower your voice plan to the $39.99 MyFaves 300 plan, add unlimited Hotspot calling for 9.99 and add unlimited BIS for 24.99. You get unlimited nights and weekends, plus unlimited calls to 5 numbers that you set, plus, with unlimited hotspot calling, all calls that route through UMA are free. You would still have 5 hours of calls to people who are not on your favorite list while you are in EDGE range only, and you would get full unlimited email and data no matter where you are.

Right. In regard to secure connection - as long as you have right credentials to access it.

I had my 8220 set to WiFi only, for few weeks. Worked just fine.
