I can't get the internal GPS to work with Google Maps; it works with BlackBerry Maps and, of course, VZ Navigator.

Wouldn't Verizon have to change something in their policy to enable the GPS to work with GoogleMaps?

I guess this is the key question.
I heard/read that Google was working on fixing GPS w/ GMaps, and thought 3.0 might take advantage of that.
Guess not.

If it works with BBMaps, it should work with Google as well. I think Verizon fixed the blocked GPS issue a short time ago.
To the OP, make sure you are outside with a clear view of the sky so the GOS can find the sats and acquire a fix. Could take 15-20 minutes the first time.

I understood... and there has been some debate on this, that back around Thanksgiving Verizon opened the GPS up to BBMaps only. Other GPS functions only work as in the past when VZNavigator is subscribed.
I could be wrong. I don't want to start a whole new debate.. just that is my understanding.

I have several users in my office that have not been able to use internal GPS with Google Maps, but it works fine with BBMaps. FWIW, One of the users went so far as to call VZW, where he was informed Google Maps has been deemed a "security risk".

The previous workarounds are still in effect. There is a thread in HoFo that suppsedly fixes this issue but it requires some serious advanced techniques (hex-editing & QPST anyone?) to get this to work.
I'm the adventurous type but not this adventurous. I'll wait (forever) until Verizon finally admits that the only "security risk" is to their revenue stream.

you may be right but why does weatherbug work with the internal GPS? I have weatherbug picking up my GPS location and I am not subscribed to VZNavigator.
I think that it is possible that the GPS is not locked, but I don't know for sure.

Same here. No VZNavigator. Internal GPS works with BBMaps, Weatherbug, and Trapster.
By that logic, it should be possible for Google Maps to work with internal GPS, right?
EDIT: of course, assuming changes were made to Google Maps...

GPS is not locked, for sure, on the Storm. I'm not subscribed to VZ Nav. I have Weatherbug, Nav4All, and Garmin Mobile, on mine and they all use GPS. The caveat is that VZ only allows BBmaps and VZ Nav to work with enhanced GPS. Enhanced GPS uses cell triangulation to get a more accurate GPS fix. Enhanced GPS is just a "feature" above and beyond basic GPS funcitionality.
Without enhanced GPS, my Garmin Mobile still gets me to within 30 feet, or the correct driveway. The GPS on the Storm is just as good as my wife's Garmin Nuvi. Also, I'm sure Weatherbug needs BBmaps installed to use GPS location.

Are we sure about weatherbug? Maybe it's using the cell tower triangulation versus REAL GPS? Real GPS gets your accuracy down to 3-6 feet. I get this using my BT puck but wish that VZW would get rid of their stupid (financial) security excuses.

Weatherbug isn't picking up my GPS, but I'm a VZW customer who is in Western Europe right now.

First, this seems like it should be in the GPS forum. Anyway...
Verizon "unlocked" GPS on all Blackberrys on 12/1/08. The apps that don't work now are because they need device-specific code updates to talk to the built in GPS. Google Maps would be one of those.

I have no idea. I do know that the GPS on the Storm is still locked down *for mapping* to BBMaps and paid VZNav.

This keeps going round and round, but they unlocked it to BBMaps, with OS 4.5 running.
Show us something that states that, other than some odd post in a forum.

that is not GPS then... GPS gets you much better than 30 feet.
