Default Pearl, GPS Puck, and Google Maps

Please Login to Remove!

I am new to both BB as well as this forum. Anyhow, I have a GPS puck, which I have been using with my Dell PDA. I have a problem using it with Google Maps on my Pearl. I can get the Bluetooth up and running and the BB recognizes it, and when I go to "My Location" in the menu, it locates where I am (within 5 meters). The problem is that it will not follow me when I am driving. I can update my position by going back to the Bluetooth menu, and there I get this strange message asking me if I want it to search for other devices, or allow another device to find me. I cancel out of that. Now...if I go back to Google Maps, and hit "My Location" the position will update to my new location. Then it will stop, and just stay there, unless I go through the above procedure again.
Strangely, Blackberry Maps works just fine as a moving map. When I select it from the menu, and go to "Start GPS Navigation", everything works fine.
Maybe Google Maps is not designed to work as a moving map, but I doubt it. Does anyone have an idea concerning the root of the problem? Thanks

Google Maps does work well, and does follow you. I am not sure of the issues you are experiencingon Verizon, do you have Verizon Navigator running also?

Unfortunately Verizon has deliberately crippled the built-in GPS in the BB phones, including my 8830. This is a VERY sore issue with them!

In any case, the problem of GoogleMaps not continuing to refresh the GPS coordinates while moving is a known issue with that software. Hopefully, a new version update will correct that. Meanwhile, a workaround is to first run Blackberry Maps and start GPS navigation. THEN, start GoogleMaps while keeping BBMaps running in the background.

I have the same problem using Google maps with a bluetooth GPS puck. It does follow sometimes, but not all. I have noticed that if I am moving when I open google maps it will follow my position for a while at least, but I haven't played with it too much to figure out exactly when it does and doesn't work.

Thanks for the input regarding my Verizon 8130, with the wonderful feature of the disabled internal GPS. I will try the suggestion of running BB Maps in the backround while running Google Maps. Thanks

I have also found that if you run the GPSed tracking software (free) in the background, the GoogleMaps will track you flawlessly non-stop. Have used it for hours at a time. I use the Freedom 2000 GPS puck.

I had this problem with my Pearl 8100 and the GlobalSat BT-359. I found that it would give problems preriodically with OS's above 4.2.x.x. I downgraded to 4.2.0.X (The original one from Cincinnati Bell) and did not have any problems with any of the GPS programs and I have most of them.

Cincinnati Bell does require a tethering package for most mapping programs so you aren't overloading their system on the data plan, even if you have an unlimited plan( I argued this and got six months free). I am now happily with AT&T and all work fine. Your carrier might have a similar restriction.

I was told this OS problem was supposed to be worked out in 4.3 and now 4.5.

I hope this helps.

To get GPS working without a puck. Go to preferences > advanced > GPS. Make sure option is set to Location On (not 911 only). Access BBMaps. Then access Google Maps and GPS should work.

No puck and no VZ Nav subscription needed.
