If I'm not mistaken, SMSWakeUp is a program that will enable the Storm to grab new versions of installed software (such as VZNavigator and Virtual Voice Mail) when they are rolled out. Basically, the provider sends an "invisible" SMS to the phone telling it to go update the software.
I think it's the same approach that was used on the Motorola Q when it was first introduced (before Exchange ActiveSync was available). A new message would hit your Exchange server, trigger an invisible SMS to your phone telling it to initiate synchronization, and you would then get the message. Now that I'm a Blackberry convert, it seems like a pretty inelegant solution to me.
