My WIFI connection only works with the gprs signal turned off. As soon as I turn it on it will not connect to the internet. I don't know if there is any relevance but I only get a dash next to the WIFI setting. Any clues?

Try going to "Mobile Network Options" in the Connection Manager, and set the Connection Preference to "Wi-Fi Preferred".
