They by in no means cover 95% of the population with 3G, think you should check you math. I'm sure they have internal numbers that would show their 3G pop coverage and it would in no way be close to 95%, I would think it would be closer to 55%-70%

I bet you're pretty close. I'm in AZ and ATT gets 3g in the Phx area and Tucson, that's it, probably about 70% of folks. Not where I live (Prescott), an area of 80k people. In a prior post in this thread I asked whether the Bold would download faster in the non 3G EDGE areas just because it has better guts in it. I hope it will.

I have both the VZ and AT&T 3G and they are about the same. I cannot tell much of a difference in actual use as to which is faster. Both are about the same speed as dial up which is about like watching paint dry.

Having used 3G on my laptop, I can guarantee you that speeds that slow are indicative of devices with slow processors. Using an actual computer on the 3G network is comparable to DSL.

I beleive you. That was my original question: We know that 3G/2G download speeds to the current phones are slow because the phones themselves stink. So you really don't need 3G, EDGE is just as fast as EVDO. But what I hope is the Bold will be faster than my Pearl on EDGE, because I'm not gonna have 3G where I live, and Verizon isn't gonna have a cool phone this year.

EDGE sucks not because its slow, it sucks because you can't talk on the phone and receive data at the same time. I am on the phone for hours a day, and always an important email gets to me an hour or two later AFTER I am done making all of my calls. I would MUCH rather talk on my bluetooth headset and do email all at the same time. HSPDA will allow simultaneous voice and data.
And, the speed of the new Bold is a lot greater than the current BlackBerries, and has more RAM. Your damn right the extra speed will be noticed.

Compared to the other carriers no ... they don't have cool phones. ALL of them are basic run of the mill phones with the exception of the Voyager. And even that is just a basic phone with no ability of 3rd party apps and whatnot.

While its true that CDMA users have to wait longer to get the newest models, when they do get them, they are improved over the original GSM ones. Its seems RIM is trying to shorten the lag time between the 2 protocols with the 9000. If that's the case then Verizon should get the 9000 this year, but only time will tell.

You can quit with the hobbled BS already I would hardly call disabling the GPS hobbled. I know you dont care for verizon and thats fine. But you are spreading untruths at this point.

The devices arent hobbled in any way. They are very usable Nothing on the phone has been removed so you can not use it.
Take a Sprint 8130 that is hobbled. It will do MMS sprint just doesnt allow it.
Verizon 8130 you can use everything on the phone granted you have to pay for it but it still works.
And Baker you can take all the shots you want it really doesnt matter.

I'm not taking a shot with this, it's a fact. It's annoying and it sucks (for those on Verizon). If I had Verizon, I would be very unhappy about it. If ATT was doing it, I would be unhappy about it. People talking about it and pointing it out is just a manifestation of that. I agree that the phone isn't "hobbled" as I'm sure many people wouldn't use the GPS functionality even if it was there. Regardless, the fact that you can't use many of the very good free products that utilize GPS, is certainly a downfall of Verizon.

I love Verizon. Like I pointed out in many of my prior messages ... I am a device guy. If they came out with a better overall selection consistently, I would more than willingly switch back to VZW. As it stands though, my appetite is over 4 phones a year, and their device menu is highly anemic and non-interesting. Most people though, do not buy phones like I do, so their dislike for Verizon is probably different than my own. For example, I am buying iPhone 2 at launch, and I am buying Bold when it is released.
Verizon is an awesome network. In my area, service between AT&T and VZW are just about identical, except I find VZW has slightly better call quality. It is different in other areas though. I was with them for 3 years.
