Wow, no shortage of people looking to hop aboard the flame bus on this thread! LOL

I agree that the BBerry is an email-centric device, so that should come first. At the same time, texting is a function of the phone and it would be nice if they took the time to make it accomodating like they did for emails as far as shortcuts go. I have plenty of friends with BlackBerrys/email capable devices, and just about every one of them still texts quite a bit.

I guess I agree with the gist of Caspan's earlier post. Just because you own a BlackBerry doesn't mean that email HAS to be your primary form of communication while using it. To each their own.

What about hitting C to compose, then either find your contact and if they don't have an email address setup, just select their name and it'll automatically start an sms. Alternatively if you have some with both methods (email and phone num for text), hit C, find contact, hit menu to left of trackball and select sms

Seems like a lot of steps but maybe takes me 5 seconds if that to do

Not to mention if they send you a text and yer reading it, just hit R to reply
Good point. It is pretty quick to just use the menu/use the steps you mentioned to compose an SMS/MMS message. Perhaps we're just being lazy in wanting a shortcut key! Hahahaha...

Hahaha...merciless. All the man wanted to do was text a little more quickly and he got flame-broiled like a Whopper.

Aside from my previous suggestion (post #17), from the homescreen, type the name of the person you want to text, menu key, and select SMS. Seems straightforward as well.

Hmm i just noticed something. If i turn off dial from homescreen and click on "C" then select a contact, hit the BB button and select sms then by deafult it will always be on sms for that 1 contact. now if i want to send a email from the home screen i can just hit "M" then "C" not sure if that helps but i am really excited about it cuz now for all the contacts i sms alot i changed the default option to sms YAyy

And you work for Nielson ratings or something? Go find hard evidence that more SMS's are sent via BB than Emails, then come back here.

I was talking in general. It is pretty much a given fact that text messages are the ideal form of communication these days. Im not just talking about BBs cause none of my friends have a BB so emailing them wouldnt do anything lol

What a bunch of idiots in this thread. The kid is asking a simple question, help him with an answer or alternative and be done with it. This attitude that if hes not using email, then he should get another phone, is ridiculous and you people need a break from your BB. Its not a family member, its a smartphone.

To answer your question, there is no direct shortcut, but with a few clicks you can be composing a text to
Hit C type the first few letters of the person you want to text, hit menu and choose Text. Done.

BBs are also so much more than email. Sure it was originally the main purpose of it, but now its my mp3 player, GPS, newspaper, video player, calendar, alarm clock etc. If youre JUST using email, then your analogy is correct.

This guy didnt have any attitude at all, the first, second, third replies were people getting on him for not wanting to use email.

Some people need to pull the battery, and get outside with some fresh air for the afternoon.

Ps: Wheres the bud at?

I think you should re-read my initial response and the quote I took from the OP's original post. I did not "get on him" for not wanting to use email. I was simply reminding him that people do e-mail from their mobile devices. You can take it however you wish.

I don't know about anyone else but SMSs don't cost money if part of your plan, nor do you require a data plan. When I was 21 paying $45/Month for a GB of traffic would be just nuts, I didn't have $45 to pay for my phone a month let alone a data plan when I was that age.

We all have our reasons why we use the device the way we want to, you can't force that on someone else because that's how you use it! And in his defense not all phones have email yet that your sending to. SMS is a common medium that all phones support so why use a cutting edge technology that your friend won't get until they get home and open hotmail. Why not SMS them "hey what's up? wanna do something tonight?". It was why it was created, Short Message System to chit chat short messages. Again in his defense when he said he is 21 it wasn't meant as an omission of stupidity that because he is 21 he is dumb and must not know how to use the device meant for real adults and tech geniuses. It means hey I'm young and all my friends don't have $200 to spend on phone bills with data plans and email, they have Pay As You Go and flip phones with only SMS on them...

Give the dude some slack and stop with the mod mentality, he asked a legit question that I want to know the answer to as well, and guess what I'm a BES administrator and in IT so I guess I'm an idiot too cause my girlfriend uses SMS to chat with me and half my friends cause their not tech geeks and just have an ordinary phone that can only SMS...

Keep the thread to answering the question if you can't answer it then don't respond like he is an idiot for wanting that. Man what is this IRC?
Well said.... each to their own and even some geeks think email is dead

By the way qsms works really well

Lt. Dan, you bought the wrong device! Some of the stuff you want is available on the Nokia E71, the closest thing to the Blackberry form factor. You can set a side button for "compose sms", giving you the one-touch text message creation you're looking for. Also, when you've got the message composed, hitting the green phone "Send" button will shoot your text off to the recipient.

The Blackberry has way superior email handling capabilities, but if email is not your focus then bail on the Blackberry and pick up the Nokia E71. For AT&T you want the E71-2 with the NAM 3G. Also, AT&T is about to release the E71 themselves at carrier-discounted prices.

Question when you press the q key is that on the home screen or in the messages folder? cause if its in the messages folder then no problem of interfering as the q hold hot key only works on the home screen

For the record, he brought it upon himself to assume things revolved around his 2009 world.

If you have dial by name activated at the home screen, you can do the following (I'm not sure if it will work with SureType devices, and will not work on the Storm):

1. Start typing the person's name
2. Highlight the person's name and number
3. Press the BlackBerry button (to the left of the trackball) then press S then press the trackball.

This is how I always send texts, although personally most of my messaging takes place by email or BB Messenger.
