Fatal Error during App Loader

Hi.
I have looked through previous threads and cannot find any instances which are quite the same. My apologies if this has been discussed previously.
I was trying to install the latest batch of updates with the Desktop Manager onto my Pearl. It said that the process would involve the removal of all existing versions of software including the operating system and te the installation of the latest vrsions and the reinstatement of application data.
The process began and the removal of existing software and operatin system was completed. However, I then got an error message stating that 'a fatal error has occured while updating your device's software. Please try again.'.
Since then, the desktop manager has been unable to detect my blackberry even though the device manager can 'see it'.
All that I get on the device is a whit screen with a symbol which appears to suggest that there are no apps / operating system installed - it has rendered the device useless.
Fortunately, this is my secondary blackberry which I have only just obtained so I had no personal data / documents on the phone. As such, I did not do a backup.
I would be really grateful for any advice to assist me with getting the device back up and running.
