I could theorize..... the lock on your device is keyed to the carrier SIM inserted. They have figured out some way to chop out the electrical bits in a SIM chip which hold this information, and replace it with some custom silicon that somehow reports to the phone it's a valid SIM for the locked carrier. (I'm not an electrical engineer to theorize more deeply how it actually works at the wire level)
Seeing as how they want you to cut a hole in your SIM, that's the only way I can think of right now that it would work - hack the hardware, not the software.
looks like unlocking the device instead would be a little more worth it for your wallet. this method costs just as much for some, even a little more.
This method would appeal to those that switch phones a lot, not a person who gets a single device unlocked once or twice a year (for free from the carrier, or paying for it). Different groups of people.

if it worked on one GSM bb, it would work on them all. Talked to HorizonWireless and it doesnt work on the BlackBerry devices. Its a software lock rather than the hardware. Also since the SIM is a solid state memory device, there is no guarantee that the information would be stored in the same place on every SIM.
This is just like Turbo sim that unlocked the i-phone before the software soltion was released. Turbo sim was iffy, so many came back not working, just cause cutomers pulled it out of thier i-phones. First off, u ruin your sim card, you have to chop it up. secondly if you switch device often this thing will stop working, its VERY FLIMSY and last but not least this probably wont work on a blackberry. It basically fools the device into thinking the sim inserted is the carriers sim its locked to. Now, we all know how secure berrys are, i really doubt this will work, wont pass the security check. As many of you know, after the 8700, no one has been able to come up with a solution to hard unlock a berry. Security is amazing. Even BB5 phones were cracked, but the BB is still unlockable. Just via codes
