Default Questions about upgrading the OS

Please Login to Remove!

I am ready to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.5.

Do I need to remove my applications or my settings etc or do a reset of the device first? Or Do I just upgrade it like installing any other application and expect all games, programs, etc to be there when it finishes the upgrade?

If I mess it up and if I wipe it using JL_commander, can I just install 4.2 back and recover all my e-mails, applications, etc from an earlier back up?

I just want to know if I can get back to 4.2 the way it was before 4.5 upgrade with complete wipe, re-install and restore backup.

Thank You.

You do not need to remove anything. The first step of the upgrade is to do a complete backup. The last step is a restore.

Many people (including me) do a backup before the upgrade. Just in case.

Yes, you can us JL_CMDER and reinstall 4.2 and then reload the backed up data.

Applications loaded via Desktop Manager are easy. Over the air applications are a bit more difficult.

1. I would recommend doing a complete backup first of your device using DM. The upgrade process will make an upgrade also, but I do this for safety sake.
2. I would also recommend doing a backup of your third party apps. See the Sticky thread in the RIM software section of this forum written by John Clark.
3. If your install goofs, no, reverting back to 4.2 won't automatically get all your emails etc., back. You will need to restore from the backup file you make in #1 above, whether you end up installing 4.2 or 4.5. After using JL_cmder to wipe, you will need to use the third party app backup you make in #2 above to restore those.

Good luck with it, you should be fine.

Thank You both.
I am now doing the back up (which I generally do every week).

I am not sure about the back up for the 3rd Party Applications. I thought the DM Back Up process also saves those as well, I guess I was wrong.

I will review John Clark's topic to get more info on that. Thank You. *Just did it, and got my [PIN] folder saved with my back up. Thank you once again!

If your upgrade works, then all applications will carry over.

If it doesn't work and you have to use a manual backup, the OTA applications will need to be downloaded again.

I am not as worried about applications carrying over, I am worried if I have to go back to 4.2..

Is there anyway I can get a snapshot of all of my applications on my Phone?
I still don't understand why OTA applications cannot be backed up. After all they are not online applications, they are just installed OTA to the device, they all should have some .jad or something on the device?

If it is really impossible, all I would like to be able to do is save a list of all my applications, so I don't forget what I downloaded.

However some OTA applications were free for limited time like BB Lounge, I guess it will be PITA to find those again.

You can look at Options > Advanced > Applications and make a list or screenshot of all listed there.

I think I am going to have to type them all. Is there anyway of knowing which ones were OTA and which ones were not.. I guess I can compare it to the Applications screen on DM? Anything that's not on DM were OTA?

I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. Follow the instructions on how to back up your OTA applications.

Do a second backup.

Then upgrade. Once you start using 4.5 you will never want to go back to 4.2.

NJ, Believe me, whenever I think something will go wrong, it just does.
I guess if applications don't carry over or does not work properly, then they are not compatible with 4.5. And If i really like 4.5, I would have to decide between 4.5 or those apps..
I am going to try this and let you guys know what happened.

So the reverse of that is that if you don't think it will go wrong, it won't. Get positive!

You will be fine. I predict it.
