Hello,

I got the 8900 and so far, I must say, I am not overly impressed. To me it seems like a streamlined curve, with nothing much more to offer than it's nice display and semi-upgraded browser.

My particular dismay comes in the for of the GPS operation. I have tried Blackberry Maps, Google maps and amAzegps. They dont find the satellites. If this problem continues, I am going to have to send the phone back. Are there any settings that I might not be aware of that need to be enabled in order for the tracking to be allowed?

My GPS worked right out of the box.

Try refreshing your GPS in Options - Advanced Options - GPS - Menu - Refresh GPS.

To get GPS, you need to have Location Services on. Then you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky. Could take about 20 minutes or more to get a lock the first time. It helps if you can use one of the mapping programs (I like GoogleMaps since it uses cell tower triangulation to locate you) to locate your position as close as possible.

One reason it can take such a long time initially is that the device needs to download the current ephemeris tables so it knows which sat is where. Locating yourself helps to speed up the process.

GPS isn't an instant on thing, no matter what kind of device you have. You need a clear view of at least 3 sats before you get a position.

Key is to go into the options > advanced > gps and make sure GPS Services is set to ON. After that you need to be outside. Occasionally my 8820 won't lock on GPS quickly - if I'm in the car I just set it on the dash for a few minutes.

This is a good question to be raised! I didn't have a thought of this! Arrgh!

Oh wait... I guess, if you already set Data Service: Off When Roaming in Mobile Network settings, this would eliminate the download from A-GPS...

Turn it off before you enter roaming area.

Options -> Advanced Options -> GPS -> Location OFF

The GPS on mine seems to work even better than it does on my work 8830 or on my previous 8310. It works great, even in the house and I had it on yesterday watching the little blue location dot (Google Maps) move as my brother was driving.
