It should be coming soon, tmobile released it in Germany already. I really don't know what is taking them so long to release it in the US as well...

I heard from a friend that is a TMO store manager that we can expect this in Jan or Feb of 2009

I'd take that with a grain of salt.

+1 on that. Timing seems off. Why not release it in time for the holidays? Would have been nice.

I have no secret info, but through my various searches and inquiries I have been repeatedly led to believe first quarter 2009.

the other carrier releases also seemed to skip a little late into Q4, so i think there were some issues on RIM's side*.

as for TMO, they probably didn't feel a need to rush a not-quite-ready handset when:
  • they could keep pushing the G1
  • Companion Flights is still a big promotion and activation-getter
  • Pearls and Curves are still hot and move easy with Q4 price drops
TMO knows the Javelin will sell, but to follow on the heels of the Bold and Storm may have been a costly campaign. and i haven't heard of any other heavy hitters coming, so the Javelin will be perfect to push Q1 numbers.

* should that be RIM's "edge"?

I think they almost certainly will. The only BBs T-Mobile pays to get first are the pearl series BBs. AT&T launched the 8800 and the 8300 first and I dont think anything has changed with the Bold and the Curve II. All signs point to an AT&T launch in mid Dec and T-Mobile in mid to late January (25th according to BB214's info).

Mid Dec would be next week and haven't the carriers been given a 3 month exclusivity period in the past? If so then we are looking @ a mid March TMO rollout.

ATT won't launch the 8900 first in the US, they have the Bold and iPhone to sell, and the 8900 is not 3G. It would KILL their business to launch a 2G phone and hype it as great now. Not gonna happen folks, they aren't that dumb. Tmob will open the 8900 deal, don't know when, but you can take that to the bank! 8900 unlocked prices are dropping on ebay by the day.

So if it doesn't happen, are you going to write us all a check? (Although I'd prefer cash....)

^^ Wishful thinking. AT&T is the 800lb gorilla of US blackberry sales. Much as I like T-Mobile and wish they got it out first on black friday, it isnt going to happen.

What makes you think there is an exclusivity period in this case? I think this is going to be a pretty low key launch, just a refresh of the Curve series. Not a whole new model like the Bold, Storm or even Pearl Flip.

But UMA will not wrk for a T-Mobile customer on an 8900 unlock, correct?
