I'm a total noob when it comes to BB. I'm loving my new Curve. My old phone was a Windows Mobile device with the same carrier. In Outlook, I have my phone numbers entered with the phone number followed by a ~ and a comment.
(e.g., "(xxx) xxx-xxxx ~comment")

My old phone would simply treat everything following the ~ as a comment and wouldn't dial any of it. But when I try to dial those numbers on my BB, I get an audio message that says "Your call cannot be completed as dialed, please check the number and dial again". Any phone numbers in my address book that don't have the ~ plus comment dial just fine.

Any ideas on why these phone numbers aren't working? Is there a setting that I can change? Alternatively, is there a different character that I can use to designate a comment that BB will then ignore?

Not that I know of, your phone fields should only contain phone numbers and extensions

Part of the issue is that I'm using an external contact management system that creates these comments when I sync it with Outlook (not really under my control). It's never caused a problem before...but now

glopact, AFAIK there is no comment symbol for BB phone no. fields.

I would like one to be available as it is easier, for some, just to have a short comment with its number. (E.g., "sister's home", "weekend job", etc.) BBs allow only 2 symbols in phone no. fields: a WAIT ("!" symbol), and a PAUSE ("," symbol).

• WAIT: For the caller; the phone stops dialing and prompts for input.
  
• PAUSE: For the phone; the phone temporarily stops dialing and then continues dialing what follows the pause symbol.

You can add (repeat?) phone nos. in the Notes field, with notes (of course). These numbers can be dialed by the BB if you so choose. This is as close as you will be with phone nos. with comments.
