BB 9800 Software and Linux

Many thanks in advance for any help here, I have
a very general question. I have a close friend who
has just purchased a Blackberry "Torch" 9800 from
AT&T. First thing she did was hand it to me asking
if I could get it going. Ok, but.....
I was able to get the battery in and it's now
charging and looks to be operational. Here's the
very basic question, I am an exclusively Linux
person and developer. The two other environments
are just something I won't deal with. So, I notice
that the Blackberry 9800 software is certified
to be used on that OS out of Oregon. Has anyone
here attempted to use the 9800, or any Blackberry,
software on a Linux platform.
I may give it a go using Wine. If that is not
successful then I will have to find an old iso
of XP and bring it up in VirtualBox.
What happens if I just plug the 9800 into the
USB port of any computer. Does it just look
like a flash memory stick with files I can
edit, upload and download.
Sorry to get a little geeky.
Thanks for any help.
