Does the possible shutdown in the US affect a user who is on a BES in the US (along with the Exchange server they are on), but the user actually resides outside the US (Canada, China) and their BB is from a carrier in that country?

I'm still confident there won't be a shutdown, but I'm covering all the questions I'll be asked...

Word on the street (ie, I've heard it but have no proof) is that RIM hasn't been totally forthcoming about the "patch", and that, if they have to resort to it, it will involve also patching all BES installations.

Anyone heard anything like this?

I know in the early reading about a patch it was going to require a change on all systems.

Sorry I dont use BES, that was just a little FYI in regards to the "workaround"

Our RIM Rep. told us it would involve patching our BES server, handhelds would not need to be patched.

Hello everyone

Since my company is based is Canada, i dont beleive we will be impacted by a possible shutdown of RIM activities. On the other hand, i am wondering about that ''software workaround'' RIM claim to have. I can't seem to find any details about this backup solution anywhere. There is also the possibility that this workaround also infringed on patent rights as the hardware side did. Rim as been wrong once with this matter, they can be wrong again.

Those NTP guys, as i understand it, are a bunch of specialize IT lawyers upholding a dozen of patents and waiting for companies like RIM to step onto their property and sue them right away. Quite a lame way to make a living in my opinion, but hey, isn't USA the Lawyers paradise?

...and once NTP has successfully shut them down they will start their next phase: patent infringement suits against actual Blackberry OWNERS. It seems they have also patented the act of actually receiving email via push. So, anyone who has ever received a push email will be sued. Get out your checkbooks!

I can't speak about the one conf call I was on (due to non-disclosure agreement)...

But one with Gartner said... No problems for US BES if the user is out of the country... However that was a call back in January...

Based on the Multi-Mode info now on RIM/Blackberry's web site, it appears since RIM would be flipping the switch on their US NOC... Since data/email goes.... BES -> Rim NOC -> Wireless provider -> HandHeld... that would imply to me that there is a really good chance that users with handhelds connected to a US Based BES would also need the software upgraded on the handheld no matter where they are traveling...
