I like the curve and I like Tmo but UMA is driving me crazy. How many of you are running UMA consistently without dropped calls. How many of you can switch from tower to wifi and vise versa without problems?

Other than the TMO outage I have had no problems period. I make calls that last up to three hours and have never been dropped. I can switch from UMA to GSM without dropping.

I too have switched from UMA to GSM without interruption. I don't make THAT many calls, though. But when I have it has worked fine.

It has worked properly for me as well. It is not perfect, as a few times it has reverted to the mobile network while I was well within range of my router, failing to dial a call. However, UMA overall has been very reliable and helpful to me. I still prefer the VoIP on my other phone except that I can't use the same number with that.

After a warranty exchange of a dead phone, my UMA is solid. Worked fairly well before but the phone rebooted a couple times while on calls.

I am no engineer, but it seems there is a lot of hardware/software issues to work out still with UMA. Some appear to just get lucky and have zero issues, others like you and I have had major issues. I am on my third replacement phone. Hope you stay solid with that replacement!

I've had very few problems with UMA. Once it establishes the UMA connection I don't drop calls at home. Occasionally on other wifi systems (hotels, etc.) I drop calls.

I think it works as good as new technology would - most of the time it's ok, but if you run into the problem, not too many resources to troubleshoot available. This being said, after whooping 4 days using it - I am very glad I got UMA, using it from Singapore and it works !

Unhappy throwing in the towel on UMA

I gave up... wanted to use UMA as home "business line" but dropped calls made it impossible. I connect via a Westell 327W router on Verizon DSL, and couldn't get anybody to figure out configuration. When it worked, the calls were clear, but dropped calls like mad, even worse with bluetooth.

T-Mobile support has been great though. When I finally called for the umpteenth time, they switched me to a 1500 minute plan for $49.99 a month, dropped the "hotspot at home" and so it's ten bucks LESS a month. I get 5 bars at home, so no issue with cell network. Used that today, and it worked fine. Too bad, it was a great idea, but there are just too many variables in the chain!

I've had few issues with UMA except in one spot in my home where wifi is weak and so is cell signal (1 bar) Usually, the handoff gets screwed up here and I get a dropped call. On the brighter side, I've been using UMA with my travel router in my hotel in western China for the past week. Free calls back and forth to the States..WOOHOO!!!

From my experience I've come to believe UMA has more to do with your WiFi connection and share load than it has to do with UMA itself.

When I'm at home I use a secure Netgear Mimo rangemax, which is one of the more powerful wifi routers on the market, and ALL my calls are crystal clear with no problems.

When I'm at my friend's Coffeeshop where he has an ancient Linksys WiFi setup on the almost extint dinosaur of a Modem called the Westell 2200Modem, and when you got 20-30 New Yorkers sharing this frail WiFi connection in the shop my UMA connection is as good to me as very hot cup of hot chocolate in the Gobi desert at noon. Meaning I get lots of dropped calls and my calls are all filled with hissing static. When I switch back to EDGE its fine.

Default T-Mobile UMA Settings

I was having many problems with UMA and spent 3 weeks with T-Mobile Tech support trying to sort it out. The answer finally came from a talk with Linksys Tech Support. They advised the following settings:

BEACON = 50

RTS THRESHOLD = 2304

FRAGMENTATION THRESHOLD = 2304

CHANNEL = 3

I have had rock solid connections ever since.

I just put my channel to 3 and it does seem to help. I have been trying to perfectly tweak my settings and I think I have it now. I have the above settings set, as well as having my Transmit Power (parameter of the DD-WRT firmware I have installed on my Linksys WRT54G router) set to 56. Web browsing is fast and UMA seems to connect very quickly.

Jeremy, is there a reason you chose 56? I set mine to 70. Have you narrowed it down from there to a level that you think works best?

I just chose double the default (28). I wonder if 70 would work better.

70 is the max they recommend on the DD-WRT sites....so OF COURSE that's where I put it!
