"EDGE" or "3G" means that you are in data network coverage area, if you have the data plan (Blackberry, Iphone, PDA or whatever it might be) then you can utilize that type of connection or network. "EDGE" or "3G" is meaningless until you have a data plan to utilize that type of connection. Essentially your voice service will always be GSM, but your phone wont reflect that it will reflect the EDGE or 3G because you have the ability to use that type of network if you had the adequate provisioning.
